Driving back through town yesterday I came up behind a learner driver on a hill at traffic lights. I left a decent space between us (just in case) and noticed the car rocking back and forwards on the clutch. I thought this was an odd place to teach clutch control considering there were cars infront of the young female learner.
So this continued and looking at the instructor he did not seem particularly bothered the poor little Ford Fusion was by now rocking back and forward on the clutch rather "violently" now, the girl obviously starting to lose her ability to control the car on the clutch.
The lights turn to green and after some kangarooing she sets off but because of the traffic we don't make it through the lights and they turn to red again. We are now sitting downhill and she sits in front of me with her brake lights blinding me, another pet hate of mine! Instructor seems quite happy she is sitting on the foot brake occasionally creeping forward.
Next she goes to get into the lane to enable her to turn left, no signals to let others know of her intentions, just moves over into this lane as she pleases!
Many other mistakes seemed to go unnoticed but these were a few examples. I'm sure most instructors are good at their jobs but I have noticed quite a few these days that I would consider displaying a bad standard of driving.
I'm certainly not perfect but surely if the basics can't be taught then people such as this girl haven't got a hope of passing their test.

Yes, Noticed a few bad instructors, happily teaching students to drive with no lights, riding the clutch, not indicating on roundabouts, cutting across roundabouts etc
I remember my driving instructor moaning about several other instructors too....

I watched an instructor with a learner driver last night who had neglected to put any L plates on. The car was subtly stickered across the rear screen, but that was the only indication.
I suppose the benefit if the doubt would be that it could have been a refresher session or something. But they were incapable of pulling out of a junction of a very very quiet back street.

When I was driving past a side road to my right recently, a learner car shot straight over the give-way line by at least a metre, before coming to a sudden stop.
I was very surprised that an Instructor would allow a learner to do this, but when I looked more closely, it was the Instructor who was driving! (he was the sole occupant in the car)
But yes, there were bad instructors years ago as well. I remember taking a client to a quiet road to practice reversing around a corner. I noticed an Instructor demonstrating a turn in the road to her client.
Not only did she hit the kerb on the reverse, but she also hit it going forward too!

I think instructors are under pressure to get people through the test quickly in order to get repeat business via family or friends. No one wants to learn slowly and properly, people want it now, so something has to slip. There are a lot of learner drivers around here, most of which struggle to stay in the centre of their lane and reach 30mph, yet are being taken into town centres and onto dual carriageways.
