Leaving after an accident

Just been speaking to my dad.
He was at a roundabout this evening behind another car. The car rolls backwards hitting my his 1 month old Passat CC GT on the nose. Apparently quite hard, hard enough to know about.
The other driver drives off, my dad follows, and managed to catch up. The driver indicated into a layby and stopped, my dad stops and hopped out and walked towards him. Before he reached the other car, he had floored it and sped off.
The car has a fair bit of damage, pushed the bumper in and visible mis-alignment.
He is not to worried as it is a company car, but he isnt looking forward to the inevitable 1L Polo courtesy car he will get from VW.
What shocked me was that a driver would stop, pretending to cooperate. But only to speed off. Twice. Makes me think he was not insured.

The poor man. All those people who have had their lives literally ruined by hit and run drivers must be feeling for his plight..Other driver was still scum though. Sadly this is what the world is coming to
I'm going through a similar experience at the moment, but I did manage to stop the driver and swap details ater they side-swiped me on a roundabout.
However, as I was more concerned about following the other car, I did not get any witness details. Big mistake.
I reported the failure to stop to the police afterwards, but all they did was confirm the information the driver gave me was correct, and told me there was nothing more they would do.
It is now going through the insurers, and due to to the lack of witnesses, it is likely to go for joint liability/knock for knock. Had I simply reported the reg and vehicle details to the police, the other driver would have been fully liable, and likely faced charges as well.
Pretty pissed off at this as you can imagine.

tboxon Monday a guy in a big motorhome thing reversed onto my sisters Clio, which was parked , she was inside watching out the window
She took a photo of his reg quickly, then went and banged on his window to try and tell him what he just did, he looked at her and drove off!!

I spend my working days arguing these sort of cases, in these incidents you need a witness or CCTV, without it if they dispute they were there, or more commonly that you drove into them, you're in trouble, the law says the natural flow of traffic is forwards, if there's a dispute you need to provide evidence (ie witness or CCTV) otherwise they will settle in his favour or possibly if your insurance company push it 50/50. It's not what happend that counts it's what you can prove.
