Risks of Unfeasibly Low Mileage Cars?
Discussion
V70 coming to end of its natural life and servicing/tyre costs of Volvo hard to swallow in these times of austerity.
Looking at Mondeos as well specced ones are quite nice and cheaper to run - have found April 2010 registered cars (28/4/2010) on Ford Direct with 25 miles on the clock, 3 of them in fact...
Obviously they have been registered to meet a cut off and left standing, so I reckon there is a deal to be had there, but is there any risk with a car thats done nothing its entire left apart from being left in (probably) a wet car park?

A car that's only a few months old? Good as new - there's a bargain to be had!
Indeed, but i'm a cynic, no such thing as free lunch etc etc.... Going to price up car and compare savings, plus of course I want the unpopular 203bhp Titanium X Sport versions rather than the 23bhp diesel version which helps...TedMaul said:

I wouldn't worry about it not having been driven for 5 months; all it may need are tyres if the old ones have become deformed by not rolling, and maybe a battery if it's gone flat and won't charge. I'd imagine the fuel in the tank and the oil/filters etc will be fine, if it's been stored inside in the dry.But for Gods Sake man don't buy it if it's gotten WET during that time!
My Dad bought a brand new, still in the wrapper, Ford Granada in 1991 which was made in 1988 I believe. Just sat, unregistered, for all that time. It was fine.
Hard to believe no one ordered a white Granada Ghia in saloon form with the pants 2.0l engine and steel wheels.
(after it went back as a company car we found it two years later, on the same mileage sitting on a forcourt. ost unwanted car ever)

They should be on the max pressures for delivery from the factory. OK, it's not 5mths but I often don't move one of our cars for weeks at a time and (touch wood) never had any issues. I have the rear tyres slightly below the normal load specified pressures.TedMaul said:

I was more concerned about corrosion of disks and pads! Both my MGTF and the Mustang have had advisories on the MOT for pitting on the discs, but that is because neither are/were used much, and again, a bit of use will see the discs tidy up.

Surface corrosion can spread across the discs though, especially on the less heavily used rears. Once it's set in then it tends to rub the pad away and gradually there's less and less "clean" disc.

My uncle recently got a baby-poo brown Passat - 1 year old, had 43 miles on the clock. Dealer said it was sat on a runway in England for that time. We went to see it when it rolled off the transporter, other than a bit of green stuff growing on the window rubbers it looked fine. The wheels had plastic covers stuck over the alloys, I assume that keeps the braking components OK.
To the OP - Mondeos are hard to beat for running costs. After 5 Vauxhalls and some French junk in the past, this Mondeo I have is brilliant, self servicing costs me £40 and takes less than 30 minutes. Even the brake pads only take an hour to do all round, even for an amateur like me.

Should present no problems, most volume manufactured cars are produced in mass and sit in fields or on on waste grounds for months (or even years) until they're registered and find a home.
Arnold Clark for example has lots of sites like this in and around Glasgow, they obviously buy in bulk to get good prices from the manufacturers then just stockpile the cars until sold.

k all the issues start with the several year old sub 12k car as the owner may be servicing to mileage not age and it hasn't seen the garage since new.
