How much financial ruin will I be in....
Discussion
Just had my clio182 serviced at Renault who has advised me the following needs doing;
NSF inner driveshaft gaitor leaking and OSF driveshaft gaitor retaining clip loose.
They quoted me about £350 to do this so I said no so I could shop around for quotes. Being a non car fiddly person I'm pretty sure it's beyond my capabilities, but am I likely to get this job done anywhere cheaper?
I've also read on the wonderful Internet that on a 182 you can't just replace part of the cv joint like the boot, the whole driveshaft has to be replaced! Surely not?!
Any friendly advise would be appreciated.
Thanks!

and a clip is a clip at the end of the day.
And possibly not much more than a cable-tie.As is the usual, it is likely the main dealer is at the top end of the charging spectrum. Find yourself a good independent and build a relationship with them. You should then find service time a lot less of a game of roulette.
I don't know this car, but in the past I have replaced driveshaft gaiters with the universal type sold by most motor factors. You can buy a gaitor that has a split it in it, and comes with grease & glue to refit with the drivesaft in situ.
I imagine that the majority of the cost is removing & refitting the driveshaft, at £90ph...2 gaitors, and VAT easily mounts up. Couple of universal gaitors probably £20 ?...and an hours labour at a sympathetic garage...

Well it may sound like b
ks but it isn`t. Renault do not sell any parts for some of their driveshafts seperately. Ridiculous? possibly but still true. The LH inner joints on some Renaults have a weird spider/seal/gaiter arrangement as shown here:

The triangular plate shown here (at the wrong end) should be attached to the inner gaitor and is bolted to the gearbox. Common or garden gaiter clips won`t cut it here.

'Kin 'ell!2. I've not heard of that, but the way they're making cars these days it wouldn't totally surprise me.
Ask around friends, family and colleagues and try to find an independent garage you can trust. I'd have thought you'd get those 2 jobs done for either 1 or 2 hours labour. Labour charges depend on where you are in the country but about £40-£50 per hour I would have thought.
Former Renault service advisor here, I have no idea whether you can get it done heaps cheaper elsewhere but the price they're quoting you is about right - they're not diddling you.
Personal opinion is that I'd just have it done - it's a performance Clio not a shopping trolley, so you want the right parts on it fitted the right way. Of course there is no guarantee that Renault will do it properly (oh the horror stories I could tell you) but at least if a dealer does it you've got heaps of comeback when the front wheels fall off.
Sorry, I mean if, yes definitely IF.

Reminds me when the Peugeot 'forgot' to tighten the wheelnuts on my girlfriends, Mums' Samba Cabriolet. Only cost them the price of the MOT, the 'big' service, 2 new wheels, 2 new tyres, all of the wheel nuts & a very good Valet (It was back on the 80's when it was a new(ish) car)
I agree with it being a performance Clio, and yes to doing it properly...but what is a Renault main dealer hourly rate these days £90 ?....a guess.
The cost of the part is fixed, I assume, it is unique and not available elsewhere....although I'd have a very, very long search !.
Fitting a driveshaft is hardly rocket science, so your local indie would be 1/2 price, arguably more conscientious, and you would still have comeback if you are not happy.
I know I am cynical, but never had a good experience with main dealers. I like to see the whites of the eyes of the bloke who is doing the work !

I don't know if its the case on the clio, but on some cars the inner drive shaft isn't round; its got cut outs in it for some reason so a universal boot won't fit.
Probably the reason for that is so that a universal boot won't fit...Whilst I agree in part with the ex-service adviser further up a reputable indi garage will still have a guarentee and will still fix anything they have broken. Most of the time with less of a fight than at a dealers. Also, as also said above, its a hard job to screw up.
The Nsf inner gaiter is as stated a special one that bolts to the gearbox & has to seal the oil in, It can be replaced on its own but can be a bit awkward as the bearing assembly has to come of the shaft first & these are fragile & easily damaged. It sounds to me like you have been quoted to do the boot as i would expect a complete shaft to be a lot more expensive than that (happy to be proven wrong
) Any compotent garage should be able to replace the boot, i would charge @ £120 to do this job where i work with a genuine new boot, gearbox oil etc. May be worth checking the alignment after it has been done as the suspension has been disturbed.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Think I will have to shop around a bit. Can anyone who knows about clios confirm the whole new driveshaft issue, being that it seems to be a bit complicated on the picture above?
Perhaps a call to k-tech will clear things up...
Thanks.
The inner boot is on the left side of the picture, the 3 pronged bit with the bearings can be removed by removing a circlip then underneath is a bearing. The new boot comes with a new bearing so the old one can be just knocked off (easier said than done) then the new boot is fitted Perhaps a call to k-tech will clear things up...
Thanks.
