Other things to check on them is that the gearbox is good, these cars do get abused and if some ham fisted hooligan has been slamming the gears in the 'box won't last too long.
Rear suspension is another area that can wear quite badly too so needs checking properly.
As has already been said, they are flimsy cars which aren't built the best, but that's also why they're good fun, so if it's priced well and is in good condition with service history go for it.

From what I can make out, it's other things such as electrics that give out hopelessly, although don't wish to be held to that

Saxos and the like do initially seem like reasonable buys, but when you look at some ENCAP results it quickly makes you realise that cheap isn't the only criteria for buying cars.
