Winter tyres on larger alloys, or smaller spare set?

Am I going to get a decent winter tyre in 19 inch size, or is a spare set of smaller wheels going to be no more expensive?

yup, its a mk2 3.2 TT, and they come (in other countries) with 17's, so the plan was to get some 17's.

Vredestrein (sp!) wintertrak's are 900 for a set on the 19's, or I can get a set of oem 17's off the bay, and some 17 vredestriens for about the same in total.

Lucky, me - I managed to obtain a set of alloys off the bay, identical to the ones on the car, for spares - I now have my lads old winter tyres on them. Lucky I say as I got them for £195 for all four, which for a set of genuine Saab wheels is pretty good, even though two of them have slight scuffing. Well chuffed, not seen a used set before or since. Latest set the same (Double Evo they are called, spooky as the tyres now on them are from an Evo!) on the bay are a set of four reconditioned, £495. They retail at £331 each from Elkparts, similar price AFAIK from dealers.
At the price I paid I don't mind using alloys as winter wheels; I think there may have been problems getting hold of a set of steels large enough to clear the brakes on the 9-3 '06 Sportwagon with the correct offset. So bring on the ice & snow...

I have an arrangment with the local garage. They store my summer, and winter tyres, and fit them as required. No spare set needed!

The higher profile tyres will make the car ride nicer - if we have as much trouble with potholes this year you will be thankful of the steel wheels (which bend instead of shatter) and the extra travel in the sidewall.
