Sorn question, bought car not been on road since 91!
Discussion
Been in a similar situation before and bugger all happened.Last situation was when i bought two rgv250 motorcycles, they both hadn't been on the road for years and previous owner hadn't sorned them.As soon as i got home i sorned both of them, but while doing this online warnings were coming up about me being fined etc, dvla told me oh don't worry about that and everything was fine!.This time i've bought a car that hasn't been on the road since 1991 and the previous owner hadn't sorned it,im online just now and its coming up about warnings for gap in time since it's been taxed etc, again mention fines. Will i just carry on sorning it?

Can't remember the date but if off the road pre-dates SORN introduction no need to SORNB'stard Child said:

Can't remember the date but if off the road pre-dates SORN introduction no need to SORNThey said it was not a fine for using it but a fine for not doing the paper work for SORNING it.
I'm in the same situation (bought a car which hasn't been on the road since early 1990s. I have been 'reliably' informed by the DVLA that if the car has been off the road since before SORN was required, then you don't need to SORN now. However, if you tax the car and then ever decide to take it off the road, you'll need to SORN.

SORN isn’t needed if:
you no longer have the vehicle and DVLA has been informed
your insurance company has written off the vehicle
you take the vehicle abroad permanently
you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle
you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days
your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998
I finally got my MGB back on the road a few years ago after it was last taxed in '92, no problem with DVLA over SORN as it was pre-legislation but of course now have to SORN it as it's back in the "system".
Similarly with a bike I bought a few years ago, last on the road in '96 and I bought it in '06 but was aware that I needed SORN it as soon as it came into my ownership. Did that online but never received the notification through the post as per usual. But I kept a paper copy of the email confirmation and set myself a reminder to do it at the same time in subsequent years just in case the DVLA became arsey over the matter. Finally taxed it a few months ago, the guy in the Post Office said I might have a problem re-Sorn but as yet nothing but I've got the back up just in case.
