Circa £10k, Baby and Dog Friendly, Quick yet Reasonable...

...Ideally I'd like something Pistonheads-Esq that I can get the family in (Me,SWMBO, baby and medium size dog) but isn't just a boring box on wheels. Must be an auto (for the wife), not break the bank to run yet be quick enough to still be fun.

I'd like something that has had the lions share of its depreciation already so i don't mind something a bit older; however, I don't want a car that is going to break down and leave my wife and baby stranded every 5 mins.

circa 10k is my limit, although it isn't a target, so anything from 4-10k is in scope, either 4x4 or estate...... Any suggestions?
