So, I've got a 328i which I'm wanting to chop in for another car. It's a bit expensive on servicing and petrol.. and insurance, and tyres, and it could be cheaper on tax too..
So, I'm looking at trading it in for something a bit more frugal / cheaper to run. Budget, including trade in, of £3-4k max.
I was thinking an Alfa 147, but have gone a little cold on them due to their expensive servicing.
Quite fancy having an MX-5 but would probably miss the luggage capacity, then again if we have to pack 2 small bags as opposed to 1 big bag for a weekend visiting family I guess it's not the end of the world.
Any (sensible-ish) ideas welcome.

Pretty good, handling wise far better than my previous two cars, (MG-ZR / Seat Toledo) Pretty 'nippy', Nice sounding. Pretty nice for cruising down the motorway on nice and stable and quiet at er... 'cruising speeds'
Good for a hack down the B roads on the way to work.
Mine had to have new rear shocks which made for a pretty pricey service.
Pretty good car all round, I'm just after something which will munch up less of my money.

MX5 more than ample size boot for a couple of squashy bags - you just get your oh used to having a bag for shoes, bag for makeup and another for clothes. Your job is to squeeze them into various spaces around the car.
We got fairly ambitious with a bit of practice. Did a week's camping a few years ago in an MG B roadster, so we're looking at:
-Windbreak
-Tent
-Airbed plus compressor
-camping stove plus gas
-coolbag
-3 x disposable barbeques
-2 x clothes bags
-2 x sleeping bags
-2 x travel rugs
-2 x folding camping chairs
-1 x boxer dog (went behind the seats)
-dog food and bowls
-various large water bottles
All without having to resort to a boot rack.
Enjoy it. Convertibles are the way forward and I would have bought an MX5 if they were a bit less common.

err...1990 130k mariner blue 1600
rebuilt ported head, mongoose stainless exhaust, engine at 137hp from RR. it's on coilovers, have reduced the rates to make it more comfy as a daily and had them reconditioned. new uprated clutch and flywheel as i was planning on turbo'ing it at somepoint, rear main changed when the flywheel was off, low mileage mk2 g'box with all new seals, replacement diff, half shafts + prop shaft. regreased the cv's + ball joints + new boots. hard dog roll bar professionally installed by the previous owner as was a sparco bucket - original seat included in mint condition. 15" alloys with new'ish toyo T1r's 195/50. geo setup by WIM. oil+filter changed every 5k miles, have changed the cambelt, tensioner, water pump, stat, rad, plugs all for piece of mind. uprated headlights + bulbs
there's probably more but i've forgotten...

The last service I had at a garage came to £560 odd, that was with new disks / pads and two rear shocks iirc.Was due an oil change a month or two ago and it's had 6l of Mobil 1 0w40 and a new filter at £97 odd (mainly because I had to get 10l of oil
