Oiling your brake discs

Careful out there everyone! WD40 have released an advert (saw it in the Sun today) claiming that WD40 is great for cleaning alloy wheels. Oh dear.

They do have a point - I use it to clean off tar spots and ground on brake dust from mine, I do however, spray it onto a rag first of all rather than directly onto the wheel. Won't be long until certain dense members of the public start trying to sue WD for their own stupidity.

Yeah but it'll keep the discs shiny and stop them rusting in all this wet weather we're having...

I've WD40'd the front disk of my motocross bike before (by mistake). Didn't take long at all to burn off.

Remember, while it's not a good idea, technically WD40 is NOT a lubricating oil.

I get WD40/GT85 on my mountain bike discs all the time when cleaning the greasy parts. Brakes feel crap for a bit but it soon burns off them. Can't see cars taking long at all to clean up.

On a related subject I guess - how do you stop brake discs rusting?

Really annoys me that whenever I leave my car for a week and it's rained, I have to wear the rust off the discs before I need to do any hard braking...

the rust grinds off very quickly... there's more important things to worry about IMO

Take them off and store them in the oven.

Reminds me of a stunt my brother pulled on me/my field bike when I was 14.

He sees orange discs. Covers them in oil/grease/something. Doesn't tell me.

When I bring the bike back from the field, mangled, bent front forks, 2 broken fingers, hole in forehead, broken fairings etc, he says he oiled them to keep them clean. Yes my brother is a stupid .

There is a product you can get to stop them rusting. I forget its name. A bloke on an MG forum I go on told me about it.

Back when I had more than 2 cars rusted disks became abit of an issue. Never got round to buying the stuff though.

I honestly can't see a bit of overspray from WD40 being a problem to brakes. Probably on par with water spray landing on the discs when driving in the rain.
