V5

Hi all.

Just received a V5 from the DVLA for a vehicle I have just bought, and its come back red, not the ususl blue.

Does anyone know if this is something I need to worry about, or have they just changed colour?

I think they have recently changed the V5 becuase of the VERY large number that went missing a while back leading to a substantial leap in cloned car problems.

If you read the booklet that comes with it it says its just the new V5 form.

I had one a few weeks ago so can admit that I was a bit worried when I pulled a red form out, first impressions are that something is wrong, but then saw the booklet.

The new V5s also clarify that the 'registered keeper' is not the 'owner' necessarily - this wasn't clear in the past.

Also a vehicle's owner cannot now declare the vehicle scrapped - on the 'new' V5s the relevant box ("Box 16"? on the 'old' V5s) is not there any more. Only authorised vehicle dismantlers (I can't remember the 'official' title of these places) can issue a "certificate of destruction" and notify the destruction/scrapping of a vehicle to DVLA now. No more weighing in the car to your local scrap metal merchant for £50 ...

Yes - the lot that went missing in 2007 IIRC. Good to see the DVLA being so quick to act in safeguarding the integrity of vehicle documentaion in the UK! They couldn't even get my name right on my last V5 (and yes, it was printed clearly and no, Kenneth is not a particularly 'difficult' name).

I had a few issues with the above process a while back after I returned a couple of log books back to DVLA declaring the vehicles as scrapped - after they tried to fine me for not sorning a scrapped vehicle I ended up with fax number of the department responsible and I'll be using that as a back up for the next one I do
