really?

This is the first time i've had such i comment about the Jag, most people love the old thing and can't believe it cost so little.

However apparently it is pretentious? I know each to their own etc but i can't see it. It's not flash or bling, just as it was when it left Browns lane, a beautiful piece of design.

It's my weekend toy so is always gleaming and i take a massive pride in it, never thought of myself as pretentios. If anything my idea of pretentious is the "keeping up with the Jones" mentality of having to have a brand new boggo Focus (or even worse a base spec C Class/3 Series) on the never never because next door/the rival at work has.

Each to their own etc, but i'm happy to know i paid very little for something i own outright and will be able to sell for a profit or at worst a very small loss....oh and it makes me smile every time i drive it or look at it smile

Just to clarify....I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK!!!! All comments welcome about the old barge. I just thought it was a interesting observation worhty of general gassing thats all.

What is it with people and their egos nowadays?

Not everyone will like your car, some may even pass comment on it.

Now, stop crying, pull your knickers up and go make me a cup of tea.

Is there a paragraph missing at the top of this post?

Anyway, someone probably thought you bought it for the badge.

Nice Jag!

I really wouldn't worry what others think of it.

Perhaps they person that made the comment saw how expensive they were when new and has flash backs of not being able to afford it at the time?

I'm guessing the comment was made by the sort of non-petrolhead who can't see beyond the badge, spends an awful lot more than you on the depreciation on a Focus, and goes through a preposterous cycle of getting rid of his car every time the warranty's about to run out because he's so terrified of having to get it serviced and MOT'd and is of the genuine opinion that the minute your warranty runs out, the car explodes.

I bet he talks, worried, of his car 'coming up to it's three years' as though it's got some kind of Blade Runner-style 'incept date'.

That's far, far more 'pretentious' behaviour than owning a classic that was expensive to buy when new.

^ This.

To use the word pretentious, what he means is more expensive that I could afford. And I am willing to bet that he has a "newer" car which is worth more than the Jag too....

Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed

Not a statement I would level at an XJS Owner really, more reserved for low spec C class, 1 or 3 series, or A4 TDI drivers with the Sline bits and a £99 private plate.

Why do you care what others think? Do you need affirmation from others in all areas of your life or just in your car choice?

Enjoy the lovely old jag and worry less about what others say thumbup

Calm down dear. I made it perfectly clear in my post that i don't give a toss what people think, just thought it was an interesting observation.

Some people can't imagine any motivation for owning a luxury car other than the desire to impress others - so to that mindset, owning an old luxury car smacks of fur coat and no knickers. The attitude is far more revealing of the flaws in their own character than anything else.

This. I'd say the person that called you pretentious doesn't actually know what it means.

Is that why you've been thinking about it enough to start this thread? OK.

Nice Jag though.
