The Subaru will be miles better for a sunday morning hoon, but day to day the S4 will be the nicer car. The scooby's engine is intrusively loud almost all the time and the suspension is very firm, the S4 is fairly quiet and comfortable, has a slightly better boot and you can leave it in a car park without having to worry about people hurting it. I'd go with the S4, it's worth the extra outlay imo.

Just wondering, if you're budgeting £10k for the S4 why aren't you looking at what Impreza you could get for £10k? That might sway your decision more.
I guess it's because I have seen Imprezas at £6-£7k that I'd like. Sticking with WRXs is a £10k one much better than a £7k one? I'm biased against Audis, but have very recent experience of both Imprezas & S4s
The Audi pissed me off all ends up in terms of reliability. New radiator, new suspension bushes with some other bits n bobs. The clincher was a new clutch on a 3 year old S4, which wasn't something I was expecting. Exspecially when the flywheel needed changing too. Despite every Motor Engineer (I have access to a very qulaified group at work) being 100% convinced that the damaged flywheel wrecked the clutch, Audi were adamant that the clutch was my fault, despite repacing the flywheel on warranty.
It's now gone and I won't be buying another Audi again
Whilst being fast, it felt strangely disconnected to the road and not realy something to chuck around corners unless you had blind faith in the tyres gripping.
The Impreza I bought my wife is fantastic, it feels alive and has had no reliability issues in the time she's had it.
Personally I'd go for the Impreza.

Changed to a B6 S4 auto, I have a number of routes which I cover regularly. I am also a named driver on a wrx JDM impreza which has mild mods taking it to approx 300bhp/ton.
In the S4 I pass everything on the road sub a ton without even thinking about it. The subaru is noisy, uncomfortable and constantly requires my attention to make rapid progress.It is also slower.
If you have never driven a powerful auto car, do it, you know where I am going with this!

If a 300bhp/ton STi is slower than a 200bhp/ton B6 S4 then there is either something wrong with it or you can't drive.

Just keep an eye out and be patient. I was looking for a while, mine was on autotrader for less than 2 hours, 24 later it was mine! 57K FSH(mainly Audi) belts, disks and pads, and radiators recently changed, superb condition for 9,800A B6 for 10k, is going to have been to the moon and back.
Great car, unfortunately I don't have any experience of the Subaru so can't really comment on that!

'04 Audi B6 S4: 1660kg, 339bhp = 204bhp/Ton
Much closer than you imply...AND that's using an RB320 as the reference point!

'04 Audi B6 S4: 1660kg, 339bhp = 204bhp/Ton
Much closer than you imply...AND that's using an RB320 as the reference point!
I'm also not sure why thesyn is complaining about having to pay attention when he drives fast.
