a stupid question about brakes and wheels

When you upgrade your brakes ie. buy a full big brake kit (calipers, pads, disks) does the original ABS system still work?

Same for when you increase wheel size, does the traction control and stability control still work perfectly?

When you increase wheel size you should decrease tyre size to keep the rolling radius the same. I imagine that a change in rolling radius wouldn't really have an effect on TC/SC.

Many big brake kits have mounting points for ABS sensors and because they basically just detect lock they still work the same way.

I recently changed the pads and discs on my car.

The fronts were just a straight swap. The rear discs have an ABS ring, I took that off and tried to fit it the new discs but the old ones didn't fit the new discs that I had bought, so now the ABS doesn't work.

When I was looking, I couldn't see any specific discs for my car with an ABS ring already fitted, and read that you can just take the old ones off and put them on the new discs.

My car is quite old, don't know if new cars still have the same?

I think you need to do a bit more research or bite the bullet and go for original manufacturer rear discs, rather than pattern ones. You wont get the car through the MOT with the ABS system out of action.

The brembos on there aren't pattern discs, they're just plain bog standard ones. I read that you could just take the ABS ring off the old discs and swap them over. Was a complete pain to get off anyway, and even then it didn't fit. The rear discs are OEM spec, so no sure why it didn't fit.

I think the rear discs are only about £30 each for original ones, so I will bite the bullet and get some fitted before the next MOT.

They don't just detect a completely stopped wheel, they look at the rate of change of rotational speed (i.e. acceleration) to detect a wheel that is going to lock. If the grip characteristics of the car are changed sufficiently then it could reduce the effectiveness of the ABS, or even make it activate prematurely. It won't stop it working however.

ABS is typically sensed on the hub. It's only old, antiquated systems that sense on the disc. In general, you're fine upgrading.

On some of the older Audi A4's (think it was bosch calipers, can't remember) you have to swap the ABS ring and bearing over when you put new rear discs on, although they are a straight fit.

Yeah, I made sure the new discs came with bearings.

I thought it would be a straight swap, but looking back now on the Brembo website, it just lists them as Williams fitment 93-97, but the Williams 1 and 2 didn't have ABS, and the only options they give you are for 'with bearings kit' or 'without bearings kit'.

Getting the old ABS ring off was a right pain aswell. My mate had get the welders torch out and heat it up then try knocking it off with a chisel and hammer, took bloody ages just to get one off.

Yeah, they're a PITA to get off, and it's exacerbeted by the fact they're quite delicate.

Are you sure it's an ABS sensor and not just a road speed sensor?

Definitely ABS, as the light on the dash is now on, and I managed to lock the wheels up while testing it.

Hmm. Well, you're either gonna have to find some discs with ABS rings, and allow yours to fit, or get yours to fit those brembo's.
