a4 95-97
im looking for other options or would like to hear on what you have and how it is on reliability

Look hard enough and you may find a BMW 325 or 525tds, they should get near to 50mpg but be a damned sight better than the other suggestions
Other than that Passat over an A4 more car for your money.
you will struggle to average 40mpg out of one of these, let alone 50mpg! great cars though!Other than that Passat over an A4 more car for your money.

Peugeot 406 HDi. Not glamorous but comfy with a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge fuel tank and 50mpg. Should be able to get something with around 100-120k on it for £1000. Friend has one for hacking back and forth to work and easily gets 700+ miles to a tank at high 40s, low 50s.
I agree. I had a 406 hdi 90 for 3 years and it was a great motorway cruiser. 70 litre tank and 60mpg on a run was great.Just sold my 206 2.0 HDi for about a grand with 162k miles on it. Engine still sweet and new owner getting 62-63mpg out of it. Cheap motoring. Never broke down either. In 50k miles of ownership, all it had was regular servicing, cambelt change and new £40/pair wishbones at front as bushes knackered.
Not bad for a french car. Recommended if you're after a cheap and reliable car.

I drove an 2001 Octavia TDi 110 from 95k to 175k and all it needed (aside from consumables) was four shocks and a front ARB. Fairly sure it was on the original clutch and turbo too. Did 54 mpg. I even upgraded it to the OEM satnav and the dashboard that showed satnav directions.
I miss that car. I'm pretty sure you could get one for a grand.

My Dad had a 306 diesel and I've had a mk3 golf td (not tdi)
Both engines are fine (I thought the TD was a little agricultural but OK) As far as the car that surrounds them the golf rots and there's the risk of electrical maladies with the pug. Also, may only be mine but the gearbox was like stirring porridge. Still, I commuted 1hr plus each way every day in it for 6 months, it never let me down and even towed "a substantial amount" for 5 hrs down south.
I'd argue the pug 306 would be the better driver's car.
So if you do go for the Golf, check the bodywork thoroughly. The arches are obvious, but also behind the front lip of the bonnet, watser catches in the rubber seal.
