Impossible car combinations

In light of the Austin Rover thread, remembered going to see Montego and Maestro manufacture c1984 and there was a compound full of impossible cars. For example Montego Turbo Maestro Vans, Maestro Estates etc, etc. Apparently once the build was in production it was made.
So question. Were all these cars crushed and did most manufacturers suffer from this problem?

Montego and Maestro were originally the same car, the development just diverged. So I assume a Tego Turbo front would fit on a Maestro van without any trouble...
Basically, that is it. Vanden Plas interiors in 1.3 base cars etc. Essentially it seemed more economic to build an impossible car and solve post-production than stop and solve pre-production.yeah I once saw this BMW where they had stuck an X5s running gear under a 3 series coupe shell and created this hideous 4x4 coupe thing....
and another BMW where they put the back end of a 1 series onto the front of a 5 series to create this god-awful massive hatch-back thing.....
and another BMW where they stuck a crash damaged 1 series shell onto the running gear of an X3 to make this truly horrific small 4x4 thing.....
and another BMW where they stuck a barn door onto the back of a Mini and then stuck it onto the running gear an X3 to create truly the worst car ever inflicted on the world.....
Funnily enough none of them were crushed.... they were all at a BMW dealership.

Colleague of my dad had a slightly different problem - he'd ordered a 1.8 injection Carlton. Then at a service they talked about problems with the carbs. Apparently they'd got the order wrong ....
I know of several cases where this has occured - for example, the wrong colour bodyshell is loaded, so the car is the right spec, but wrong colour. This was only a couple of years ago at a well-known car factory that I worked at. I have a more amusing example but that would be name-and-shame. Computer systems control the majority of the process so it's only when things go really wrong, or human input is required, that it can happen.
I believe the 'impossible cars' either get used as factory site cars (never registered), or held until a customer orders that spec if its still 'possible' (i.e. wrong stereo, as opposed to wrong engine, or something like that), or more often, just scrapped.
It was very difficult, but possible to have the 'wrong' dampers, anti-roll bars, brake modulators, the list goes on... however the many processes, checks and systems meant it was near-impossible for the car to be shipped without it being picked up and put right.
