guys, any suggestions for a cheap 4x4 up to about 6k or so

I don't intend using it offroad, i just want something big and high and spacious thats relaxing on long journeys. The inside should preferably be all leather, comfortable, reliable etc..

an old 4.2 Amazon would fit the bill perfectly but they start at around 8 or 9k really

what about the Nissan patrols ? any other suggestions would be most welcome ...

And comfortable.

So, OP, you want a reliable, comfortable, spacious, full leather, relaxing on long journey's, 4 wheel drive.... and all for about £6k? And most importantly fun to boot?

I think I might have a kitchen sink back here as well, take it off my hands please.......

The 4.2d is absolutely bulletproof - they're probably the toughest, most reliable vehicle in existence and will clock up intergalactic miles of abuse without dying.

They're actually pretty good to drive too, less car-like than most modern 4x4s (honest about being a truck!) but with a nice feel to the controls.

Would seem a bit of a waste to me owning one without taking it off road though.

Why would anyone take a car off road though ? i don't get it

I could understand if you lived in the Australian outback but this is the UK.

Even if I was a farmer (which I am not) I would be using a tractor not a 4x4 car.

Maybe there's no actual such thing as 'off roading' ? I reckon people just invent it.

How about a Grand Cherokee?

The 4.7V8 has a fair bit of poke or there are the CRDs and it's staggering how modern an example you'd get for your budget.

Why would you drive on a race circuit? It doesn't go anywhere.

Why would buy a car capable of breaking the speed limit? Its illegal.

etc...

PS I wouldn't call a Patrol/Landcruiser a car either.

ok

how about this

loosk smart, has some toys, LPG

will probably be quite comfy on long journeys and the interior is just teh sort of thing im looking for

my main motivation behind all this is to have a sort of living room on stilts for all the family

what do you reckon:

Can anyone explain to me where the "fun" bit comes in driving some hulking 4x4 on the road when an ordinary saloon or estate performs better in every way?

Cars that are slower and harder to manage/dont handle very well ... are more fun most of the time to me than 'good' cars.

Ive done many good cars and many fast cars. It gets boring after a while, especially all these modern ones that drive themselves.

Just a thought.

Is there some sort of sub-species of half-man/half-donkey that has evolved in this country of ours or something ? Who would drive around with rims like that... do people really do that st ?

And some of those hulking 4x4's also provide surprisingly good control feedback and balance to make hustling them along more fun. Still more fun off road than on it though. tongue out

Hi-Lux Surf's tend to be excellent VFM as they are pretty much all imports. But they are bulletproof and some have all the toys. Thousands of gun-toting nutters in god-forsaken places can't be wrong...

wavey

Surfs are a bit smaller than Cruisers/Patrols etc though if rear seat space matters, and narrower which means you feel more body roll. Also avoid the 2.4td which tends to overheat.

That model RR was a low point for LR reliability AFAIK, but the newer model is getting down to your budget and would be perfect.
