306 turbo diesel

Is there evidence / are you confident of lots of oil changes? If so it should be OK in terms of wear.
I've been doing oil changes around 4k (because of my special fuel
)on the same engine in a Cit ZX on 164k which seems to be running better than ever. Probably good for another 100k + miles, although I keep reminding myself I'm supposed to be selling it!

I cant remember when they switched but there is a 1.9 tdi and a 2.0 HDI ?
I had the HDI about 7 yrs ago and it was really good, MPG never dropped below 55 but it suffered the usual French problems.
I think the previous gen engine is prone to headgasket/head problems if its ever been overheated and unless its been skimmed etc it can be problematic.
I cant list what to look for because it could be everything

That is WAY too expensive! A few of my mates run 306 TDI/HDI and havent paid anywhere near that. 1 bought a S plate 5door TDI with 150k FSH for £600 2 years ago that has straight bodywork and good eqipment level. Another has a 306 HDI estate that cost £400 with good bodywork, engine + service history.
The older TDIs are said to be more reliable and you can tweek the boast a little to make them more interesting.

You need to check the electrics with these things. They're very popular with a lot of my mates because they're cheap, economical, reasonably ok to drive and store a decent amount of kit. Every single one of my mates has had problems with them and nearly always the electrics - stereos, electric windows, sunroofs jamming open, alarm faults for those that fitted them, instrument failure etc etc.
Personally, I'd avoid one with that mileage and at that price.
Seems too expensive for the mileage to me.
The PSA diesels are good for high miles but on these (and pretty much any French car) - there will be a lot of wear and tear on all the other components.
Look out for a good e36 318tds Saloon or Compact, just check the cambelt and waterpump have been done and you'll have a good cheap oil burner.

I'd amazed you can buy any car for 400 quid with scrap metal prices as they are at the moment. The scrappage scheme pushed up the price of the bottom end of the second hand market, too.
There are thousands and thousands of £400 cars with tax an test, what there isnt is a supply of old cars with little or no tax and test for sub £200 like there was until a year ago or so.Edited by kambites on Monday 11th October 10:53

Beyond a certain age condition and care are more important than mileage. Saying that it still sounds expensive, unless its the Dturbo S, which has the same chassis kit as gti6/xsi. I think people like to sell then at higher prices. Also the first sporty diesel marketed towards driving experience Iirc.
I bought a '97 R reg 306 D-Turbo for my missus as a first car. Cosmetically it is a shed (Although she has ended up adding a few scrapes of her own) and the windows don't work, but it drives really well and is astonishingly frugal. Really good ride over our poorly surfaced roads and speedbumps too...
I paid £400 for it.

My daughter bought a 2.0HDI Estate part exed for a 1.6 Astra with a dead engine. It cost about 6 - 700 hundred depending on how much you valued a practicaly dead Astra. It had 177000 on but seemed sound enough.
As it happens somebody ran into the back of her and we got a cash settlement for £950.00 from the other insurers. We put that into a 133000 mile 306HDI Estate. It's just taken her to the north of Scotland and back average MPG 53, it all works and it's good to drive, 306's were all good drivers cars. I reckon this one will go for another few years yet.
Got 300 quid for the damaged one too!
