Replacement for Nissan X-Trail?

My 9 year old Nissan X-Trail is nearly dead - something to do with diesel pump and big money required to fix it.
The car has been superbly versatile over the years and approx 130,000 miles. It has carried 4 of us plus skiing gear to the Pyrenees several times, been filled to the gunwhales with rubbish for tip runs, and towed many vehicles out of ditches in the snow.
I would not have hesitated to buy another X-Trail, however my local mechanic who now services the car has suggested that expensive pump problems are fairly common on some common rail diesel engines.
I'm looking for something that has the same versatility, comfort, has 4wd and will hopefully last longer than a Lancia in a carwash. At the moment the Honda CRV and Kia Sorrento seem possibles (am I allowed to mention Kia on PH?)- does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

What sort of budget are you looking at for your replacement? I'm quite a Jeep and Land Rover fan, so that's where my suggestions would go; Freelander and Cherokee.
Lots of other possibilities though, I'm also a big fan of the Suzuki Jimny, although I admit it might be a bit small for what you are after. I was also also impressed with the Grand Vitara's I've driven and I like Subaru's, so count the Forrester on the list too.

How important is economy?
My Mrs has owned all 3.
Comparisons based on our experience:
CRV ('52 2.0 petrol SE Sport)
Very much road biased
Very comfortable, smooth and quiet
Very dull to drive
Quite spacious
Surprisingly thirsty, 25-28mpg
Few annoying reliability gripes - EGR valve, lambda sensors, wheel bearings all were replaced frequently
Forester ('55 plate 2.5 XT)
Better in snow (Permie 4x4, 50/50 split)
Much faster and nicer handling
Quite a bit smaller so cabin is less roomy
Thirsty (20-25mpg)
No reliability issues at all
X-Trail ('03 2.2 diesel)
In between (sort-of).
Better in snow than CRV, not as good as Forester.
Fairly similar road-handling and performance to CRV, bit noisier.
More economical, obviously, 35+mpg
Lots of fairly serious reliability issues although most were sorted under warranty, we only kept it for 6 months.

I admit it isn't for everyone, but in my view it's probably one of the best off road vehicles available to buy.
1.3 litres is a small engine and it isn't fast, but it goes ok and is better on fuel than a Tdi Land Rover.

also I really really can't see anything on a car costing 3-3.5k to fix. you could get whole new engine for much cheaper than that!

May as well suggest a U2150 Unimog or an Audi TT. Both have 4x4.

My be able to fix the pump for much less than 3k.
ETA Taken from here which suggest £300-500 for refurb and a 3-4 hour job to remove and refit. £600-700 all in. Makes the car worth repaining IMO.

But I just couldn't bear the embarrassment of driving it on the road.
Budget could be up to £12k for the right piece of kit.

replacing the fuel filter may work for a couple of weeks, there's a suction control valve possible and some say the main pump can be replaced without removing the engine which would save a large lump of the labour cost I was quoted.
I spoke to a diesel specialist in Manchester and was hoping he would tell me he had seen it all before etc and could sort it for £500, however he was not interested and just told me to go to Nissan.
May be worth a visit to Nissan for their verdict and a quote. I will make sure I am sitting down when it's delivered though.
