Dutton Phaeton V8...any good?
Discussion
a friend of mine had an essex V6 engined one...it was downright dangerous
his was about as "bodged" as you can imagine...we all laughed when we first saw it, and continued to laugh throughout his brief spell with it
complete pile of crap, dubbed by all of us and its owner as the "foetus" that should have been aborted
I'm sure it was built by a mechanically incompetent retard originally

A mate had one with a Lotus Cortina engine in it. Went like stink, and was so loud it set car alarms off. What more would you want?
The looks will always be a personal thing, but he never had a bad word to say about it..
I think they look hideous, BUT, the one in question is all black so does look evil as hell! The main draw is the thought of 200+ horses in a go kart.... The looks will always be a personal thing, but he never had a bad word to say about it..

How do you insure these things for road use.....? would it be silly money?
Problem is the original Dutton chassis - it's not exactly straight or true, it's not exactly triangulated, there is no certainty that the suspension points on each side are mirror images, and the welding . . . well, lets not say too much about that . . .
I use a much modified 1600 xflow powered S2 for classis trialling and it certainly highlights the problem areas. Steering lock as limited as the wheels hit the bodywork on tiny amounts of lock - so the lock stops were brackets on the lower wishbones. Except that as the suspension compresses, the change in angle of dangle of the lower wishbone forces the lock off . . .
Most ones converted for V8s hack out enourmous lumps of chassis and whack new bits in that do less well than the original stuff. Roll bar acts as a chassis member to hold the back of the chassis together! And that is so strong that if you lift the back of the car with the shop crane at work to get to the diff easily, the bar bends up and back!
But if anyone's got a cheap, running V8 I can shove into mine, let me know!
