Hi guys.
I live overseas, had a Private plate on retention since early 2007; last extension was to May 2010. I sent cheque in Feb this year and had it returned as was too early (not due to May). Id forgot all about until this week as I want to put reg on new car I am buying Christmas time.
Looked at form and it seems to imply I’ve lost it. I can of course write and try just wondering if anybody here had similar experience and what the outcome was. Plate not particularly valuable just personal.

Recently I forgot to renew my retention cert and when I found out I sent a letter off apologising and a fairly lame excuse saying I had been away on holiday along with a cheque for 3 years (£75) and although it was only month overdue I got the retention cert back a week later.

It is worth a try, just explain everything and there is a good chance you will get it back.

There seems to be a period of grace where a nice letter explaining the circumstances works well - don't know how long it's for but I would imagine you'd be OK
