.. God help me.

She's had her Rover 600(2.0l Honda engine) from new since 1997. In this time, it has been serviced once. Yes, once. The paint is pealing off, the bumpers are scuffed, the windscreen leaks, the interior is starting to go mouldy and it's just generally a total shed. The best bit though is that it has never once let her down.

She's now decided it's embarrassing (for a deputy headteacher) to be driving such a shed and since the MOT is up next month, she wants to buy something new.

She knows very little about cars so has asked me to help her out choosing something. She wants me to run off a list of cars that would be suitable and she will pick the ones she likes etc.

The requirements are as follows :

Budget Max £2500
Must be Automatic
Must have 4 doors
Must be petrol
Must be reliable (little service and many 5 min journeys)
Preferably a bit smaller than the 600 (although I think she will still go for a saloon)
Preferably purple (although I've told her it wont happen)

I've been scouring Auto Trader and the likes but have only come up with 6 cars that I feel fit all her requirements and that I think will be reliable for her too.

Mazda 6
Mazda 323
Honda Civic
Vw Golf
Nissan Almera
Seat Leon

I'm sure there are more out there so I need some help.

Honda Jazz CVT will be your best bet

Super reliable, and its very practical. May officially be a supermini but its the same size inside as most cars in the class above.

Bmw 318i

A little over budget but may be able to knock them down.

Last time i helped my mum buy a new car, she got a V6 Clio. She thought it looked 'pretty', turned out to be none too practical though

My dad was not pleased!

And despite me living over 200 miles away, she wasn't daft enough to leave her keys about when they went on holiday..Grrrrrr

Yes on all counts but not super reliable - just google jazz cvt failure...It's the biggest problem with Jazz.

That gearbox needs regular oil changes to avoid problems (every 7,5k miles) if lots of short trips and even then you can have problems. Post 2007 are better but with a 2,5k budget I doubt you'll find one.
It's a great car (I bought one for teh missus) though and the CVT is great for pottering around town but the ride is way too firm for what it is and grates if you drive on bad roads allot.

Best to go for a an old fashioned tried an trusted torque convertor box - preferably Honda - seemed to work for the OP's mum thus far!

Another vote for a Jazz (not that I know anything about them), my Mum has one and she loves it.

Well, now you mention it, I have heard of one very level headed person that might want to sell one. The only catch is that they have so many friends that it's probably not worth thinking about buying their car. If it was an Elise, then I would say "get it, get it now" but a Crossfire! Hold your horses, you would be 2 of 50,000. Not worth paying the premium really, you could get an Elise for that money but would you really want to? Would you? Exactly.

Well, I would expect a Deputy Headteacher to be able to afford more.
However, find something, anything, purple and Jap, that'll be the best way to "reliable".
Purple will be the clincher.
Fav son then.
