Can't fit the thread title in the, er, title - does anybody know somewhere around SW London for a learner driver to practice (i.e. a carpark or something?)

A friend of mine is starting his lessons soon but wants to practice somewhere too. I'm happy to give him some pointers but he's obviously not insured on my car, and an empty car park is probably the best place to go to give basic lessons such as biting points, smooth gear changes, and observations. We're based near Wimbledon, SW London. Anybody local know somewhere decent and quiet to practice on?

Cheers for responses.

I don't know the area, but industrial estates on a Sunday were where I learned; found them to be better than a car park purely because of having actual roads smile

Probably not the best question to ask on here, to be honest OP.

So! Yo are asking where you can take your uninsured friend driving? Presumably, when you both get stopped and he is done for driving without and you are done for allowing him to drive without, shall we expect a new thread?

It may be a car park you are thinking of but that doesn't make it a private area outside of the road traffic act.

Also and seeing as you seem a little 'naive', how old are you and how long have you had your full licence? You may find that you can not accompany a learner in any case.

Also, even if you don't care about the financial risk to your car, or the risk to his driving licence, you can be done for causing or permitting the use of the car with no insurance and the driving otherwise than in accordance with the licnece - which is identical to being the principal in the commission of the offences. Really, really bad idea sorry.

Ikea Croydon (or the retail park next to it).

Not sure if you can access Chessington's car park out of hours?

That car park was well known for this kind of thing back in the 90's.

Hmmnn I shall pay it a visit when/if the snow falls.

Head down to Croydon, I don't think it's a pre-requisite to have a license or insurance when driving there..... wink

It's absolutely fine to ask. Assuming anyone knows of somewhere that is without the restrictions in the RTA (i.e. a field) then it is completely legal for a non-driver to drive, without insurance, or for that matter tax or an MOT. It's important to make sure that it's a legal spot though; that is that there isn't a possibility of there being public road users there.

Any publicly accessible car park is considered a highway under the law and so it won't be legal unless as someone said you find a field or something.

Saying as the OP hasn't provided us details of whether or not he can legally supervise a new driver anyway and has admitted to wanting to allow an uninsured, unlicenced driver to use his vehicle in a public place, being told that it maybe isn't a great idea is probably quite prudent.

And, would you mind me asking what you needed to edit? 'Idiot' seems pretty straightforward to me. Ah! maybe you spelled it iodt? or idit?
