It's the external temperature sensor, usualy found clipped to the front of the car on the lower grille section of the front bumper. Also check the relay for it in the fuse box under the bonnet.
No, it isn't. It's got bugger all to do with the sensor on the bumper.Diesel Astras have 3 air temp sensors and 2 coolant temp sensors. The air sensor on the bumper on drives the display on the dash.
There's a temp sensor on the ECU, along with the atmospheric pressure sensor, and there's a temp sensor after the intercooler. I'm pretty sure it's the sensor on the ECU.

Hi appologies, the engine is a 2.0 TD
Someone already suggested the sensor on the bumper but as mentioned I also thought that was just for the temp guage on the dash to tell you how cold/warm it is outside.
The orange warning light (engine with a spanner through it) on the dash comes on when I start the van from cold and stays on for approx 3/4 of a mile, when the engine is at normal running temp and I start it the light comes on and stays on for approx 5-10 secs

Code P0070 is for the external temperature sensor circuit. Look it up if you have a copy of autodata handy.
Yes, but it's still got frig all to do with the sensor on the bumper, which drives nothing but the temp display on the dashboard.
. The external temp sensors on most modern cars are linked into the ecu as it also uses those readings when calculating fueling etc and will bring up a fault code on the ecu when there is a problem with it. If it was only linked to the temp display then it wouldn't bring up a code as it would be independant of the ecu.
