So, I'll be replacing the thermostat and doing a coolant flush on the beeemer this weekend.

Two questions, What do I do with the ~ 8L of coolant that will come out (hopefully)

Secondly, everywhere says to fill it up with distilled water (and coolant)

Is this really necessary (the distilled water part rather than coolant) or is it just for hard water areas?

I live up north where the water is pure and kettles are un-furry.

The ground, gravity and a drain usually take care of it for me.

give them a call.

and breaches pretty much every environmental law going at the same time.

Tub it up and take it to the local tip, they will recycle it for you.

Take it to a council tip. I think most will tell you to shove it in the the canister with the used engine oil.

As for distilled water or not check your workshop manual if you have one. The workshop manaul for my Audi says that the coolant system should only be filled with water from the tap. Others I have seen say to use distilled water.
