Lexus Soarer Mutates Into Mercedes

Fantastic or foul? We just can't decide...

Forget all those dodgy MR2s turned into Ferraris (honest mate, everyone reckons it's the real thing...) - there is a new king of the weird replica.

This car started life as a Toyota/Lexus Soarer and has undergone a fairly extreme Mercedesification (we know that's not a word, but it should be), but unlike the MR2 Ferraris it's not really a facsimile of any particular car.

Instead the result is an SL-style rump combined with a CLK front end and a body kit that owes quite a lot to the CLK DTM special edition.

The resulting mutant may not be to everybody's taste, but it is at least somewhat of an improvement over the bland-tastic 1990s look that the car would have originally sported. Maybe.

I hate it. No wait a minute I like it, oh hang on I've remembered it's a kit so I hate it again. Ummm hope I don't see one in my rear view mirror and pull in to let it by, will be most disappointed to give the owner the satisfaction that he's fooled me with clk dtm front end. Would be fun to do that to others tho (evil laughs)

Why?! For what it cost you could probably pick up at least a real CL!

It's very well executed, but the 'why?' part of it eludes me.

I like it - but why has it got AMG badges on it?

Anyone know what engine it has?

I know don't know if I do like it, strange really

If you're trying to get that website on the bumper to work, it should be :

http://www.material164.net

Lawd knows what they've been doing to the rear wheels on other projects.

Different culture, different ideas so I'm not going to scoff.

I gave it a one out of ten for effort.

I just don't see the point.

It's clearly an M6 DTM that the public, or indeed BMW, don't know about yet.

But seriously, what's wrong with a tidy Supra anyway ?

I think it's a well executed effort but I hate the idea of it. It's even worse an idea than the SL500 AMG I saw the other day - wow I hate AMG badges on non-AMG Mercedes-Benzes (what's wrong with an SL500?). But back to this and it's ilk. I quite like 'bland' japanese cars of the 90's. I'd love a Lexus SC400 from about 1998, it's like a Japanese XK8 in my mind. An Asian grand tourer, it doesn't need a bodykit of any design. Also that Supra M6-Z4 thing; why? the late 90's Supra is a beautiful car.

I don't really see the point in the 'Mercedes' or the Supra. However, you have to admit there is a high quality of workmanship in both!

If that is what they choose to spend their money on then fair enough.

There was a CRX del sol for sale a few weeks ago on PH with an M6 front end (if I remember rightly) that made me laugh alot!

Horrible wheels and colour choice, and the bodykit is a little OTT for my tastes.

Never the less, it is far better proportioned than many of the factory Merc coupe offerings - The new CL in Evo this month, and the E Class coupes as two examples.

Still begs the question ...... Why? Why, when a CLK AMG is available for less than the cost of building that car?

Well done for reading the title, but see the wording next to the picture.

Is it a way to have a Merc badge and reliability at the same time?
