For the last 22 years I have done all my own car repairs and servicing, engine rebuilds, diff rebuilds, crash damage, the lot.

Today my trusty E28 is in a BMW indy having a set of rear subframe bushes fitted. Its a bear of a job and I dont have the puller, i could make the puller, I have made many in the past, but right now time is tight and I have other jobs to do on other cars.

£130 plus vat. Ouch. My pride is a bit dented. I've had the car 4 years and I'm worrying that it might go wrong, cant stop thinking about the yellow boxster that fell off a ramp.

I find that by the time you've used the petrol to get the parts, find the tools to do the job and factor in the time it takes, £130 plus VAT is very reasonable.

Try paying £360 for a clutch. For a Mondeo. 8 hour job as the front subframe has to come out.

Having the belts etc done on the GT today.

Can't see the bill being cheap, but it's required.

I just hope Ned doesn't get crushed by a loose wheel or something, and I have to pay compensation... (I know he's reading this....)

Try paying £360 to have the exhaust uppipe on an Impreza replaced and being told to think yourself lucky that they only had the car in the garage for four days and didn't charge you more!

You are mere beginners. A mate of mine has just been quoted £7,000 to bring his E46 M3 fully up to scratch! After discussion, he decided to just get a bit over £2,000 of the work done - at the moment.

No, he hasn't crashed it. That's maintenence.

Audi A8

2.5K gearbox rebuild

1.5K water leak - ( water pump needs cam belt doing, parts were ~ 300 quid rest was labour to dismantle half the front of the car and was done on Mates rates..... )

few other £2-300 quid bills later it was dispatched into teh realms of eBay.
