So its the weekend your looking for a barge and you have a couple of choices to make.Your budget is around 4.5k and the car gets used everyday for everything.Which of these three would you choose ?

Well I drove an XJ8 this morning a 3.2 sport with 116k.Amazed at how whisper quiet they are and such a lovely place to be with oatmeal leather and black carpets.

It didnt feel particularly fast but I wouldnt say slow either with a nice V8 growl. This one was a 2000 model on an X plate up for 4k.The dealer told me upon arrival that it will need a replacement gearbox due to a delay when going into D but they have one and will fit it shortly.I didnt notice anything but if they want to fit a new gearbox I wont argue.

I noticed the steering felt a little vague and I could feel a knocking through the wheel over speed bumps and a slight shake under braking so I think the vague feeling is connected.I also noticed a fluffing from the rear of one of the exhausts which you couldnt hear inside the cabin.I thought I could smell a hot oily watery smell inside the cabin.Apart from that it looked very clean and tidy I am going to have a think about it.Thanks for reading.

As an ex Jag mechanic I would reccomend the XJ anyday. The S-type is a cracking drive and a top all rounder but the XJ is just that little bit more refined and in my opinion better to look at. Just remember grace pace and space

The BMW isnt a bad car though. Just has a bit of a repmobile reputation

XJ8 for me. Looking for one at the moment, although I'm holding out for a 4 litre V8 or an XJR6 (already had an X308 XJR and we didn't get on otherwise I'd be saving for one of those). Best interior and looks of the set.

In my limited experience of them, the 728i is a bit slow and the interior is very much not to my taste.

The jag interiors are like an english country house in comparison to the plush germanic interiors. Both nice though.I have yet to drive a 728 sport to make any comparisons. What problems did you have with the V8 XJR ?

Yeah, I just didn't like the interior of the 7 series, it just didn't feel special to me somehow; wheras the Jag one did. Personal taste.

Knew someone would ask that!

For a start I couldn't drive it fast. The engine was too powerfull, so I was worried about getting into trouble, but more seriously I just couldn't get used to the steering. It was too quick and too light for me, I always felt like the car was getting sucked into the inside of the corner. The last time I tried to drive mine swiftly I actually clipped the kerb on the inside of the corner, this was after owning the car for a year. Of course that's my fault, but it does go to show I just couldn't gel with the car. I also had a weird sensation that the back of the car was rolling over, almost like some sort of very discocerting rear-wheel steering going on. It didn't help that I had a couple of 'scares' in it shortly after buying it.

So yes, I couldn't drive it quickly.

Which is fine because I actually discovered I really liked driving it in a more relaxed, laid back manner; which is fine, but it's a waste to have an XJR to do that, and you pay for it in fuel and a slightly pattery ride (I assume from the big wheels).

In the end it was due a service, and needed a couple of tyres so I put it up for sale for what I bought it for (assuming it wouldn't sell) and someone offered me my full asking price, so I accepted.

I do miss the car, and am very happy to have owned it but I never really felt comfortable in it, and was always worried about scratching it, it stayed in it's garage for weeks at a time (oh yeah, I remember now...driving to work one day toward the end of ownership, really enjoying the drive when the car in front threw a stone up and chipped the windscreen, it literally did ruin my day and was probably the final straw) or something going wrong with it or fuel prices going up and it losing it's value overnight.

I drove an XJ8 a few weeks back and was much more comfortable with it, I'm going to spend roughly half what the XJR cost me on something cheeper to run and will hopefully be able to enjoy it a bit more without having to worry all the time. I'll miss the shove in the back and feeling of power you get in the XJR, but then again how long would it have been in the XJR before I crashed it? Or maybe one day i'd give in, push the throttle to the floor for just a few seconds too many and get caught speeding. I decided I'd quit while I was ahead on this one.

The XJ every time. As has been said, you're into X308 XJR (V8) territory with a £4.5k budget, or you could go for a minter of an earlier X300 XJR (6-cyl) and spend the change on lots of petrol.

E38 every time. More smiles per gallon and handles better than a wafty jaaaag.

XJ8 is a close second though.

Wouldn't the 735 be a better comparison though? V8 vs the I6 of the 728?

a friend just sold an xj8 3.2 v8 with 50k on the clock for £5200, surely that extra £1k is well spent on a low mileage one?

Well I went to look at a 2001 728i Sport this afternoon.Owner had bought it 4mths ago from auction and it had 6 previous owner when he had advised me there were 3.I noticed upon starting that the airbag light was on then went off but after the test drive it came on again as well as a low coolant level warning but upon physically checking the level all seemed ok.In fairness the car has a wedge of bills but very few stamps in the book. Some of the laquer had broken on one of the wings.

I notice in comparison to the XJ8 I drove yesterday the BMW felt firmer and more fidgety but it is a sport on 18" alloys. It didnt feel that fast either I would describe it as adequate. The Jag was like silk and more quiet in comparison and just a little bit quicker.

The 728 was up for sale for 4250 but the owner would take 4k which I decided was still too much.

I would imagine you could get a very nice car for what you are spending (BMW or Jaguar). I would keep looking.
