I've got a 2007 Cooper S and it feel like the clutch has gone but I'm a bit confused. The clutch is slipping but instead of biting near the floor it is biting right at the top. Surely if the clutch were worn out it would be biting near the floor not at the top? It is still under warranty for another three weeks but it is not covered if the clutch is worn out which it shouldn't be after 30,000 miles. What do you think?

Sounds like your clutch is absolutley shot. If the bite is high and the clutch is slipping the clutch will most probably be worn to excess. Very occasionaly it could be a fauly slave or master cylinder but to me it sounds like your clutch is shot. If your trying to claim under warranty you may have a job proving its a faulty clutch disc.

It's a real shame as I have a new one on order but it won't be here nearly Christmas. Looks like a grand down the drain!

Its not good. The only thing you could try is bleeding the clutch slave cylinder as a last resort. I had to replace the clutch in my Fiesta at 32k miles as it was worn. I bought the car with 20k miles on the clock and Im not hard on my clutch as im really self concious about such things. Modern Organic clutches wear far too quickly if subjected to any abuse in my opinion.

Been driving cars since 1996, do loads of miles, and never done a clutch on any of my cars, and never detected any slip either. I assume the cars I bought were on their original clutches, well I know the Fiesta and Mazda were as they were originally my Dads.

Drove them into London every day too for my commute, so hardly light use either.

No idea why some people seem to go through them and I don't.

I guess I must be real sensitive to mechanical sympathy or something.

Peugeot 205 GTI from 77,000 miles to 156,000 miles - no clutch change.
Volvo S40 T4 from 64,000 miles to 168,000 miles - no clutch change.
Ford Fiesta from 41,000 miles to 134,000 miles - no clutch change.
Mazda 121 from 22,000 miles to 146,000 miles - no clutch change.

I cooked a clutch once, young and stupid.

Mine is a bit like the OP's at the moment, biting very very high, but it isn't slipping at all which is weird.

You either;

a) Bought it secondhand and it was originally owned by a woman,

or

b) Are a woman,

or

c) Drive like a woman.

Slipping the clutch is bad, mkay.
