At the end of my road is a public car-park which is hardly used, there is however, a T-Reg VW Passat which has been sat there for a good 12 months and the road tax has also now expired. I know before I ask this that its probably a bit of a daft question, but is there any way that you can claim a car which has been left for a long period of time or if not is there any way of getting in touch with the owner as imo the car looks pretty straight, even if just for parts. smile

My post is in no way helpful to the OP, but I would really like to know the processes of contacting the previous owner. As there is what seems a lovely mk2 GTI 16v golf which has been left outside my mates flat for over a year now.

I think procedure is ..........write to DVLA and they try and contact registered owner and if no response from them you can claim it for small fee

there is a story on a Ford forum of someone who claimed an escort cosworth that way for very little ££££ rolleyes

Correct, all cars effectively belong to the DVLA. They will let you know if you are allowed to be it's custodian hehe

Owner could be working abroad, or banned from driving for a year and wants the car for when he returns to driving? Could be on SORN? Only DVLA will know.

the sad thing is if its on a public highway (car park) untaxed it will get a council removal/abandonned vehicle sticker put on it then within a week one of the authorised tow-ers will lift it - and weigh it in for scrap.

so if its wotth saving try and save it.

+1

Trace the owner via the registration number and DVLA.

Did he become the owner, or just the registered keeper?

You only get to become the registered keeper, and the owner can still turn up at any time and claim it back.

Actually, a cunning plan here:
If you've got a "classic" but it's run down and needs some TLC but you can't afford to fix it. Then *abandon* it, wait for the new "owner" to spend thousands doing it up, then go back and claim it back. Hey presto, all the restoration done for free biggrinbiggrin

Right, thanks guys, think I'll have a go at tracing it through the DVLA and if I can't get far there then just leave it I suppose as it seems a bit of a dead loss after that.
Thanks for all the help! smile

What would be considered as proof of ownership?

You can no more 'claim' a car that youve seen, than I can 'claim' the contents of your bank account, or a go on your lass.

Will this forum-f*ckwittery never end?
