Hi There

I have a five minute drive to the local station and want the car to warm up as fast as possible. At the moment I have a MK 2 Golf GTI for the run. I do have a 993 which warms up almost immediately but there is no way I will be using that.

Any suggestions? I used to use a Webasto Hi-Top to heat the engine but the cost of petrol makes it a bit uneconomical to fit these days.

Going on my experience of the 993 I suppose something air cooled might be best?

Oh, and it has to be cheap smile

All the best

1.1 106. 55mpg, heater that'll melt your face off within a mile, even on the coldest day.

For a five minute drive i'd be inclined to wrap up warm and accept that no car is going to get particularly warm in such a short space of time.

Something small and cheap, so you've got nothing to worry about after a year of constant cold running kills the engine.

Doesn't a Fiat Panda take about 40 seconds from starting the engine to warm air coming out of the vents? Something like that anyway.

I had a saab 900 before I bought the elise and that used to warm up super quick. With the additional bonus of heated seats you where lovely and toasty in about 2 mins (though heated seats always make me think I have wet myself)

All of my Volvo 850s have been warm within a minute on even the coldest of mornings. I'd certainly recommend one, they're massive barge bargains at the moment.

I am rather lazy in the mornings, but 5 minutes hehe

Cheap bicycle and a coat IMO.

My old RX8 used to be blowing hot within about 30 seconds of turning it on and the OH's Audi 80 Cabriolet gets warm pretty quickly.

VW Beetle (old). But does any air-cooled car have a heater which actually works? Avoid!

Anything modern with a small engine will have a light-weight block (less bulk to heat) and minimal size water jacket. Should warm up nicely.

By the way - cool running on short runs to the station certainly won't kill an engine. You want to ensure oil changes are based on time rather then mileage though.

I can't believe you want to buy a Porsche just to keep warm in the mornings. Why not get something with a HEMI V8 if you need something that will generate heat? Orrr more seriously aren't luxury cars like XJ/S-class supposed to heat up really quickly. I know my dad's super v8 does!

Hi

Some interesting suggestions thanks. I do the dash quite late at night (on nights right now), so no junctions and I can do it without stopping (pretty much). To walk would be 20 mins and I am not in the mood in the eves. Every second counts!

All the best

I had a Merc A Class diesel as a courtesy car and apparently it has a PTC electric heater assist - it blew warm air pretty well instantly.

This. I ran one for a few weeks during all the snow of jan 2003. 145 section tyres are the answer for snow!

Yep, both of mine heat up very quickly. Coolant will be up to temp in about 1.5 miles apart from on the coldest of days and the heater will start blowing warm air after about 0.5 miles, hot air in 1.
