He was carrying too many people in his car. Kinda stupid thing to do if you ask me!

Former Olympic athlete Steve Cram has been banned from driving for six months after being caught with too many passengers in his car.
The ban was enforced as he received three penalty points on his licence, taking his total to 12.

Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard that police caught him with five passengers in his Mercedes as he drove them for a meal on Newcastle's Quayside.

Mr Cram had pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing.

The sports commentator, who lives in Ryal, near Matfen, Northumberland, had argued that he would be caused excess hardship as he needed a car to carry out charity and voluntary commitments.

'Short distance'

The court was told that officers had found Cram behind the wheel on 13 July 2003, with a front seat passenger, three people in the back and a sixth person lying across their legs.

The car was suitable to carry only five passengers.

Zoe Passfield, defending, said Cram was staying at a Newcastle hotel with associates and he offered to give some of them a lift as they went for a meal.

But too many wanted a trip in his car and as it was a short distance, he drove them all.

Miss Passfield said: "He simply felt it would be impolite to ask one to get out and make their own arrangements."

But the bench was unconvinced and ordered Cram to serve a six-month ban and fined him £60 and £30 costs.

That seems a bit harsh. Trying to make an example of him, perhaps?

FFS!!! six months ban!!!

Slap on the wrist is all that's needed, not as if he was driving 500 miles.

Er......strictly speaking it was, one in the front and 4 in the back that makes 5 passengers. He wasn't a passenger, he's the driver so what's the problem?

um, you don't know the quayside do you? I bet the hotel he was driving from was the CopThorne, and then into the Quayside, which happens to be desperatly busy, full of drunks who walk out in front of you at the slightest whim.

Fully deserved IMO - there are always Police patrolling and speaking to motorists down there.

He got the six month ban unter the totting up rule, not just for this incident. It might have been only a short distance but that is not the point.

If we want the police to focus on non-speeding offences (which I would hope that we do) then we have to support them as and when they do come across such offences. Fully justified, in my view.

Well, I wouldn't do it now, but have done in the past - once got stopped at a City police checkpoint (during the IRA alerts a few years back) - 6 of us in a Fiesta, copper gave me a smile and waved me on!

I know better now, and insist everyone wears a seatbelt - would rather make two trips than risk it.

I have stayed at the copthorne on many occasions for work. If you are right that its where he was staying then i doubt he would have managed over 20mph on that stretch.

completely OTT to ban him for that IMO. Pathetic.

So I suppose 7 passengers in a Metro (in my yoof) would've been frowned upon?

Must admit it made it the ultimate Maxxers car - slow as sh!t but very low!

I wish I could have said it like that

Schnozz you're right, but then even then driving past Police Officers is asking for trouble.

I'd better not mention the time I had 7 in my Primera then. Four on the back seat and one in the boot, big blokes some of em as well. Twas a stag do way out in the wilds of Yorkshire, and I was driving slowly to the pub, so I don't feel too guilty.

yeah thats true - especially when he already had that many points on his licence. The reality is that if he had a clean licence and got 3 points for doing this, it wouldnt have been reported and no one would have felt it excessive. Its just that the end result happened to be a 6 month ban as a result of an offence that most people have been guilty of at some time or another.

He took a chance - he knew he was on nine points already - a lot of would have done the same - and he got banned.

OTT maybe but that's the way it is. What with that and the Maccams getting knocked outta the cup last Sunday, he's had a rough week.

Do driving bans work like prison sentances - will he only serve 2 months with good behaviour ?
