My Daily drive is an Alpina D3, I do about 15k miles a year and love small sports saloons.

I'm thinking of either a C63 or M3 Saloon (E90) to replace it.

Anyone have any real world experience? the D3 is an awesome bit of kit, I get between 500 and 600 miles on a full tank.

How many miles would you get out of the C63 or M3

Would they cost THAT much more to run than a D3?

All 3 cars are fantastic. If you work on the D3 being twice as economical as either the C63 or M3, you won't be far off the mark. Servicing on the D3 will be less than half of the others too. Whether the driving experience of the V8 engined cars is "worth" it, is only something you can decide.

Surely mpg is of more relevance than a combination of how big the fuel tank is and the mpg?!

I drove an E92 M3 the other day and found it absolutely superb as an all round road car - a truly accomplished and complete car. The model I drove had the DSG gearbox, which I loved. I can't remember exactly, but I think the owner said he got around 20mpg in normal driving, and about 26mpg on the motorway. No idea how big the fuel tank is though - filling them only adds weight so I prefer to run half tanks anyway, which I'd recommend (and you get fresher fuel too).

A little bit bigger but would you consider an XFR? I'm currently tyre kicking them at the moment.

Thanks guys, I guess it sounds about right, I am averaging 43ish MPG, so half that sounds about right.

XFR is lovely, but it really is in the bigger category, I think it looks bigger than a 5 series.
