Hi All,

Sadly I have had to Part Exchange my Focus ST for a pile of bricks an mortor frown

I want to now buy a cheaper car (3000 max) as a run around for the time being but something that can become a track car next summer when a new car arrives. Unfortunatley I will need a car that can seat 4 but I would really like RWD. I am fan of the hot hatch and would really like something like a Lotus Sunbeam but I think even a half decent one would be out of my price bracket.

Anyone fellow PHers got any ideas?

insurance quickly becomes an issue with RWD fat cars. what group can you go up to?

I am not really sure what insurance group I can go up too but the Focus ST was easily affordable when it came to insurance so maybe a few groups higher than that!

Omega MV6 - they were supposed to be pretty good.

BMW 328 - Can't remember the model designation but the one before the E46 they can be had in nice condition for about that money, provided you don't mind looking at many, many rough ones first.

E30 or E36 BMW 325, 328 or M3 (probably scruffy at that price). Or an E36 318is if you can find a tidy one.

Nissan 200SX, depending on how little leg room you can get away with in the back seats.

All sorts of old stuff, if you don't mind that sort of thing: chevette, manta, crapi, omega, sierra, granada, most volvos!

e36 328 is around 200bhp, for me not enough for a track car.

get a skyline gtst if you can afford insurance. 260-300bhp for under 3k. RWD, can't beat it.

I picked up a very tidy one of these for £1200 a few months ago.

Very balanced to drive with good feel but you need to work that engine hard to get the best from it. Saying that it does love to rev.

Insurance is Group 13 I think.

I agree, the chassis is extremely well balanced and it feels far sportier than it looks. The coupe is comparable, in terms of driving experience, to much more specialist stuff. However they lack power; to such a degree that one will feel like a shopping trolley after a hot Focus. When revved they go a bit but there's no torque. The E36 is still one to consider but I'd say go for the six cylinder every time. The Is does not make a good motorway car. The close ratio box leads to maddeningly high revs above 70 - noise and fuel consumption become intrusive.

For country lanes though; nothing beats it.

Considering he had a Focus ST I cant imagine it being too bad provided you don't step into M3 territory

That would depend on the driver and the set up. Im pretty sure a competant drive a decently set up 328 with some proper brakes, suspension and decent rubber is going to make an adequate track car.

got one myself, its ok. but tbh if you want a track car and want to have fun, i'd go for something a bit faster, and prob jap.
Theres a huge difference between 200bhp and 300bhp.

all depends on what you want, and more importantly how much experience you've had. If you cant get everything out of 200bhp, then 300bhp will be pretty pointless

£3,100

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2056374.htm

70k miles, been in the owners club some time.

LSD, 250hp (would make 280ish and run much nicer with a Horsham 1a chip for £300).

This is sold now, but I think this fits the bill pretty nicely

330i

231bhp RWD, should be pretty easy to insure

And over 30 mpg on a combined cycle

This one is still for sale

330i

very few 200SXs have an LSD. so factor that cost in. a Skyline GTST does. plus its a better engine to work with imo
