I was following an offroad-prepared Discovery 1 on my way home tonight and it had 5 of those whippy aerials on it. Got me thinking, what could they all be for?

Radio (as in fm receiver? Although why it would need a facking great whippy aerial is beyond me.)
CB.
Scanner maybe?

I suppose if he was in Mountain Rescue or something there could have been a VHF in there too.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure where you are from exactly, but round my way there's a Disco with loads of aerials which I see around a lot. I saw it parked up in a car park recently and noticed he has a sticker in the windscreen saying "Scottish Rally Championship - Radio Car" IIRC, so could the the same car or put to similar use.

I often have 3 on my Shogun. 1 2-way aerial in the middle of the roof. 2 FM Aerials, on the roof rails, one front left and one rear right. I spend a lot of time in areas where the standard FM aerial can only just cling onto reception; the two big aerials and diversity tuner means it's all nice and clear.

For some of the green laning mob it can be just for show.

Saw a disco with a long whip type aerial, the top of it had a small LED light bar that flashed random patterns. Car was five up, with guys wearing all weather gear, thought this odd.

Ex forces - might as well fill the holes up with something and has the added bonus of if you lose it in really deep water you can still find it by the aerials

One is the CB, another is the land detector, a further one is for the forward array, then there is the weather decadent station and finally an aerial is needed to make a fine cheese sorbet. Simple really.

Two of the aerials could well be Amateur (HAM) radio antenna's, one for the 2m band, and one for HF.

And I should know.

The led would be lighting up each time the aerial was transmitting.
