National Mileage Register and HPI check
Discussion
Hi, I'm hoping to buy a car at the weekend but when carrying out an HPI check the mileage has come bask as the following.
National Mileage Register
Data currently held on the National Mileage Register (NMR) indicates that there may be a mileage discrepancy on this vehicle.
Mileages as recorded by the National Mileage Register
Date recorded Recorded by Mileage reading Total
22-May-2006 NMR 1,200
02-Jun-2006 NMR 1
16-Jun-2008 NMR 12,000
01-Oct-2008 NMR 14,000
01-Oct-2008 NMR 14,900
06-Oct-2008 NMR 14,970
21-Nov-2008 Manufacturer 15,240
06-Apr-2009 NMR 8,000
07-Apr-2009 NMR 8 8
31-Jul-2009 DVLA 200,000
10-Aug-2009 NMR 8,000
17-Feb-2010 NMR 8,000
My question is; how reliable is this information? The DVLA 200k is the most worrying as the owner currently has the car at 27k.
Your advice would be really helpful!

NMR is full of errors, its a joke. Instead of the help it was designed to be it has become a hindrance.
Very often a dealer will HPI a potential PX, instead of writing the exact mileage, he might just round it up to the nearest thousand. A week or two later the same dealers admin department will bring the car into stock, and do another HPI, this time with exact mileage, which could be a few hundred less than previously logged with HPI. Then there is a situation where it shows a discrepancy, just for the sake of someone rounding the mileage to the nearest thousand.
The info you posted looks to me more like errors.
But as always with these things, judge it with your own eyes. A 27,000 mile 5 year old car should look reasonably fresh. I think the service history will help also.

I'm hoping the 200k should actually be 20k and perhaps the handwriting on a green part of the log book for new keeper was a little illegible...
not sure about the 8k's though.
has anyone else had these errors/weird redings when doing an hpi?
the dealer where it was serviced wasn't much help - said they had no record of mileage.

thanks guys; it looks legitimate to a point and we can write the 200k off as 20k i guess - even though it says dvla. the car is a 6 hour drive from me so it's a pain if i get there and it's a dog!
was hoping the flippin hpi would help - lol.
it's had once service that i can tell which would be fine at 27k but i will just have to run through everything with a fine tooth comb when we see the documents.
i hate buying cars!
