Emissions and lambada sensor replacement ripoff?
Discussion
A mate, who is a complete dpe when it comes to cars or life or anything, just had his car in for an MOT
it's a 2002 Vaxhall Corsa Breeze
He was told his emissions are too high and quoted him £668 for the fix all in.
The car cost £700
I have no idea what these should cost, since i never had an emissions failure beofre (
)
but it seems to be he is being taken for an idiot, which he is, but still.
Can anyone give me some useful feedback pls?
Another point is: the MOT expires on the 30th of Oct, so technically he still has an MOT, yet dvla won't let him renew his tax... WTF? I am sorry I can see it is close to expiry but surely that's none of their business. he has a valid MOT and should not be assumed to be some criminal trying to dodge out of his mot
cheers

Generally they're about £100 to buy no? Can't see it costing 600 or 700.
Nevermind, he since told me that the seatbelt anchor needed welding the cat needed replacing and some more minor bits and pieces.to top it all off, he already said to the MOT guy to go ahead...
told you he's an idiot

Why would they let him tax it, the MOT expires before the tax does. So when he's taking it from 1st Nov 2010 it won't have an MOT.cheers

Also ignoring the engine management light and running round with a dodgy lambda sensor will knacker your Cat pretty quickly.

Very impressive.
Sadly mine only has a lambda sensor
I had someone on the phone a couple days ago asking for a lumber sensor. I didn't catch what she said at first, and when she repeated it she said "its spelt L U M B E R T but the garage said the T is silent and its pronounced lumber".

Very impressive.Sadly mine only has a lambda sensor
I think the garage were winding her up.
The new tax disc is valid from November 1st, so the car will not have a valid MOT for when the new disc comes into force. So in theory you should be able to tax a car on the 7th of the month with a MOT that expired on the 4th as the tax disc would be valid from the 1st. I wonder what the DVLA will have to say about this?
Sorting out emissions is a dificult job to cost, there are so many sensors, devices and control units that could be at fault. What the car cost to buy has to do with the cost of repairing it is a phenomonen that I have come across and as far as I am aware labour rates or parts prices do not reduce as the car gets older. If repair costs V purchase price is an important factor, you could always consider scrapping it, where you could get around £150.

Mine failed the MOT recently on emissions. I knew the pre-cat Lambda was faulty on the one side as it had shown up on a code reader at the indie I use. The Lambda was changed and it flew through.
I'd get him to just change that for now, get the welding done and put it back through. I don't know how the tester can assume that the cat has gone aswell purely on the emissions unless they were excessively high...
Oh and just to add, the new sensor was £88 including the VAT, and 30 mins to fit.

The pic cheered me up, thanks.

but if you are going to take a dig at someone's lack of concentration at least don't make the same mistake yourtself.
It's still not my car?
