L plates and a learning centre cone on it's roof.

Didn't see it for long enough to see if there was a number for a legitimate driving centre but surely giving people who haven't driven before a 200bhp FWD hatch is asking for trouble?

Anyone know of any more ridiculous learner cars?

There's a 1-series you can learn in around St. Helens but I've no idea of the engine size for relative power, but power + RWD on your first ever drive would be interesting I'm assuming.

I drove a 120d when they were launched and struggled to tell it was RWD to be honest.

Theres a 118d near me (have just been stuck behind it, silly refused to pull over and allow the half dozen cars stuck behind him to get past)

With a decent instructor and dual controls, I cant see a problem with learning to drive in almost any car smile

Damn. My mate wanted to open a driving school last year. I suggested he got a Corsa VXR to try and get the young one's interested, as you could lease a VXR for about £199 a month. He never did it.

There is a logic to it.

If you can control more power then you can control less. If you can learn clutch control, hill starts, wet conditions, etc and handling in 200hp then when you step down to 60-70hp you might be less inclined to get into trouble? Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure you could learn in most cars.. Given an instructor with dual controls is going to be sat next to you you're probably not going to be able to get up to anything too stupid..?

there a driving instructor with a Puma round near me with the big rear Spoiler thing and halfords wheels, with a great big 'L' all over it. Aiming for a certain type of learner driver me thinks.

Learn in a powerful (relatively) car and you can drive a slow one, whereas doing it the other way doesn't always work brilliantly for young drivers.

Acclaim in Bristol have had Corsa VXRs for a while now. I remember passing my test in a Yaris and watching a Corsa VXR rumble past with L plates on and thinking "...bks"

It could be a "replica".

Personally If I was going to start a SOM, I would go down this route, Get something very sporty (looking) with just a standard car underneath. There was a guy locally who run one of them C2's in full rally livery when I was in college - alot of people were talking about it.

Personally I would go for:
  • Ultimate Green Focus RS "replica"
  • Fully kitted Mini Cooper S JCW "replica"
  • Audi S3 "replica" etc.

There is a 318 my friend learned in. But with a good instructor I see no problem with a powerful car.

I'm assuming you saw the corsa in the St Helens area, if so it is the same one I have seen plenty of times!!

It is not a replica but a genuine VXR.

Why would a young lad want to learn to drive in a clapped out Yaris with a 60 year old fuddy duddy when the next driving school is a young lad who is on your wave length, offering lessons in a hot hatch?

Not my views but you can see the attraction for the young 'uns. One of the local instructors had a C2 VTR which some of my mates learned in. Was actually jealous of getting in the learner schools punto I lessoned with.
