Ever wished you'd kept one of your old cars and stored it long term? So how about this - the PH collective locate and lease (long term) a big secure lockup out in the sticks - nice and cheap, no amenities other than the very basics.

The rent is split and each member pays a fee each month to cover it and the low overheads. Then you get to store whatever car you want for as long as you need. So what would you put in it? Or what would you have put in it 20 years ago?

Sounds stupid but a bog standard Saxo VTS, bog standard 106 GTI, bog standard Corsa VXR and a bog standard Clio 182.

If you look at how desired stuff like 205 GTIs, Mk2 Astra GTEs and Williams Clios are - you'd be in for a decent pot of cash come sell up time!

Exotica wise, a Gallardo Balboni, Veyron SS, Ferrari 599XX and a Réventon would keep the shopping cars company!

I can't see something like a Mk2 Focus ever have the same evocative charm as a Mk2 Escort however. A perfect "barn find" would be something stuffed with factory fresh examples of the likes of a Mk1 Escort RS2000, a Mk2 RS2000, a Mk3 RS1600i, a 205 GTI 1.9, a Mk1 Golf GTI, a Citroen DS, an E30 M3 - the usual petrolhead stuff... In the exotica lockup it would be stuff like a Testarossa, Diablo VT, Bugatti EB110, a 959 racecar etc...

Probably Some of the car's I have owned and wished I'd been able to keep. Celica GT4, Supra, 405Mi16,etc. Simple stuff that tends to get stuffed along the way and never seen again

A Mk1 Scirocco would make a better bet than a Mk1 GTi. Less of them and more aesthetically desirable (IMHO) whilst otherwise being exactly the same.

Complete waste of a car. They're designed to be driven not locked away. Garage queens make me sad, I'd much rather see a patina of use on a lovely car than pristine painwork and a shiny engine bay.

Original standard S1 Elise. Especially now Lotus are going in a different direction with more cars in the range and more expensive cars at that.

Droop snoot Firenza.
Austin A40 Farina
Mini
R5GT Turbo
Alfasud 1200Ti and a 1300 Sprint for good measure

I'd put the following modern cars in...

Current golf mk2 for another 20 years.

I might fix a few of the little jobs first though. Might be tricky to get parts when it hits 39!

Funny I like the Mk1 scirocco but compare it to a Mk1 1.6 Gti or a Swallowtail and you'll find that "the market" doesn't find them as desirable, regardless of there being less of them.

I mean wasn't the 250 GTO SWB California the "cheaper" option?

I'm kinda doing this already boxedin I never want to sell my first car (only a C2 furio limited ed version) so I started renting a garage off the council while I looked for something bigger. I just got called today that come Monday I should be renting a 8 car lockup. This will give me the space I need to restore my AW11 and when that is done I'll be saving the money I was spending on that and looking for car no3. The C2 will then come off the road, the AW11 will be summer fun car and car 3 (undecided what it will be yet) will either be new daily driver, track weapon, new project or adventure mobile.

This was I get to keep my first car (parents bought me (yes yes I know you all hate that) I get to keep the first car that's in my name and the one I will have done all the work on myself, and then I'll have my 3rd car for whatever purpose I decide I need one. Then there are still 5 more spaces (6 if you think one car will always be at my house)
