A friend was telling me an interesting story last night I thought I'd pass on.

Firstly my recent expereinces of dealers include taking a £38k car for a test drive, telling the salesman I wanted it but would have to have the opportunity to take it home 45 mins away to see if it would actually get in my drive (horrible camber off the roadmad), his response was "Well you'll just have to take a chance", so I walked away. I also spent 40 mins in a London Porsche dealership being completely ignored while 4 salesman pushed some Arab gents kids around the showroom in peddle cars!

My friends colleague who is the Chairman of a rather large Swiss company has a considerable car collection which includes every new Ferrari model. When Ferrari produce a new model he always gets one of the first but in Switzerland you have to have your car in Switzerland to tax it so Ferrari build his car, put it on a trailer and take it to Switzerland, tax it, put it back on the trailer and take it back to the factory where it is prepped. He arrives at the factory and watches it come off the end of the production line, jumps in and drives home to Geneva!

Anyone got any similar stories?

My brother had a similarly difficult driveway but the "local" mazda dealer let him borrow an RX8 and drive 20 miles home to check it fitted (it did).

Nissan offered me a 350Z for the day when I was unsure if I liked it or not.

I think it all depends on the dealer, in a way it's easier for them to lend you the car - That way they can stay in the showroom and pick up another sale. If the car is good, it will sell itself.

Bought a Monaro VXR from a dealership in Colwyn Bay, they met me at the docks in Liverpool with the car on a flat bed, spent 45 mins showing me what button did what, loaded up my S2000 as a part ex and went back to Wales. I had a 4 hour hoon round the NW of England and then got the ferry home.

I was in the process of buying a VX220 Turbo in 2004 and the salesman let me take it away for a long weekend to Germany before I'd paid in full. (I had to insure it myself mind you, that cost a bit: I was only 23).
