Are they all active? Are they out of use in certain areas? Fill me in, please, as I've driving to Watford tomorrow morning and want to know whether I can maintain a steady 0.80 lpts without being buggered by HM Government.

When I had my valentine one detector fitted there were only around three or four actually doing any speed detection across the whole gantry network. Most were around M40 junction, and the other around the Woking/M3 section.

Though if they are not showing a speed limit you can happily sail pass even the active ones without being done as they are only active with a speed limit notice.

Having said all that, I don't know anyone who has ever been done by the M25 gantry cameras.

You should be fine at 80 as long as its not in the roadworks or in the restricted speed areas denoted by the gantry/variable limits.

I drive the M25 every day, traffic permitting happy to sit at 0.8 leptons and never seen a flash, also see people gong through them much faster and never seen them go off.

Have travelled through them quite often at 0.9 lpt and not had a problem. Haven't tried the same when there are variable limits in force though.

There seems to be the provision for them, but as yet nothing that seems to be functioning.

I don't believe that gantry cameras flash.

They also aren't in operation unless there is a speed restriction in place other than the NSL
So if it says there is a 60 limit in place, stick to 60.

There are not cameras on every gantry

There's lots of signs but no cameras on the m40. One thing I have been wondering is, do the cameras work in the dark? Can they see your plate on unlit roads such as the part of the m40 currently being worked on?

Not true! For nearly two years the cameras which are actually active have been on permanently. They reduce the speed in conjuction with the variable limit signs.
I've tried to find what speed they are set to when NSL applies, the answers have varied from 79MPH (70+10%+2MPH) to 93MPH. You can carry out your own risk assessment!

I have seen the cameras between J10 and J12 flash on quite a few occasions, but never any others!

I agree they are looking all the time (as in sending a radar signal to work out speed), but I still don't know of anyone who has been done by one, ever!

The 10-12 junction ones I have seen flash too, but only when the variable speed limit is on (don't commute that route anymore so may have changed). Though the biggest worry on that part is the unmarked police cars that I have seen pulling people over.

I've only ever seen the cameras flash clockwise around J11-J13. This has always been when I'm traveling on the other carriageway. What has always struck me as a bit odd is that the units that have flashed have always been the ones covering the inner lanes, never the furthest outside/fast lane.
