When calculating the CC of an engine, does that include the area inside the head, or is it just the swept area by the pistons?

The latter.

swept volume + combustion chamber volume + head gasket volume multiplied by number of cylinders = cc
Wrong. Do not pass 'Go', do not collect £200, go straight to prison.

It is simply the swept volume of the cylinders. Bore x stroke x number of cylinders.

Think about it; something's "capacity" is the amount of stuff it can contain. One cylinder's capacity is therefore the entire space inside when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke.

Bit harsh, but this ^^^,

Eg. BMW M3 (E46)
Bore = 87mm
Stroke = 91mm
Cylinders = 6

so 3.14159 x 43.5^2 = 5945mm^2 (piston area)
5945mm^2 x 91mm = 540967mm^3 (volume per piston)
540967mm^3 x 6 = 3245795mm^3 (total volume)
= 3246cc

So capacity does NOT include anything other than the swept space, ie bore x stroke.

bks. An e46 has 440 litres capacity, and thats just the saloon. The estate is massive in comparison.

Think I should have said displacement.
