How cool is this?

6.5 Litre V8 TD engined Range Rover. It even looks stock.

www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C173585/

Needs a bit of work, but it's up at £2650.

I can believe the owner's claim that it pulls like a train.

Quite a common conversion. In the first Iraq war the yanks bought in a load of Hummer spares into the UK.
When the war was over they flogged the engines off at auction because it was more cost effective than shipping them back to the US. You need to be careful buying one though. Some are professional conversions and are done really well. Some are home conversions and done really well. There are some which are absolutely horrible. They do pull well but special attention needs to be paid the spring and shock ratings as it's a heavy engine.

I've not heard of it being done before. I'm not that into 4x4s but have started looking at early Range Rovers lately.

I've been in a few, many years ago, I'm sure as standard the engine is 6.2L Non-turbo thus that engine has been played with.

Frankly though they're not that great, the Land Rover 300 TDi is better and the Mitsi 2.6 Turbo Diesel converted RR I once went in was imense.

Wikipedia lists a 6.5TD engine for the Hummer. 215BHP and 440lb/ft.

I dont where you got that info from. But there were V8 diesels already available here. As the unit was already used in the chev pick-ups and GMC Blazer in use on the U.S bases. Very, very few V8 diesels went through the sales. I went to them often enough when they were held at Molesworth.

Yeah I've been in one with the 6.5TD engine, deafeningly noisy, loads of vibration, and not quick at all in a 3 tonne hummer at least... I can't imagine it'd be anything more than sprightly in an old Rangey

It was in LRO magazine years back. Don't know where the auction was held.

6.2l is the common engine, the bigger lump was post-Iraq#1.

At 150hp and 250lb-ft, you'd be better off with...well, anything really.

That says it all then. There contributors do lack knowledge and facts in quite a few of their articles.

Well, THEIR contributors are actually correct.

A former colleague of mine was at the auction, he worked for the IT company that supported the auctioneer's systems.

What auction would that be?. The U.S. used to auction all of there stuff through the DR at molesworth. I attended nearly everyone. And never saw bulk batches of 6.2 units. So no i dont believe the so called "facts".

Interesting selection of vehicles you have/have had! I'll be in touch should the Russians decide to invade.
