Ok got the other half an MX5 a few months back but she really does not like it, not fast enough or special enough(PH blasphamy i know !). So been having a look about and went and saw a boxster today for 6k.....thought it would be a bit of a dog but tbh it was a minter with very little to complain about, only a 2.5 but felt spritely enough and the owner will let it go for 5k cash. I was really kinda hoping it would be a dog as i'm a little scared of the big bills these engines can bring with the well documented failures but at the price it's tempting......I do all my own servicing etc and at 5k to buy that would be my plan for the pork, anyone else doing the same? Thoughts from the collective?
I’m in the market for a £5kish Boxster at the moment so if its good and you don’t buy it please pass me on the details. I have test driven 2 for around £6k ish and I have found significant and expensive faults with both examples. (also coming from a mx5 currently coincidently).
Was the rear window ok on this one?

I know the S is the better car but at 8k it's still in keeping the fsh up to date category for me......daft i know but at 5k home servicing seems to be acceptable. Just my way of thinking really, also thinking if the engine does go pop how much would could i make back if i broke it rather than repaired it which seems to be economically unviable?
One example that’s being sold by a dealer (still advertised on Ebay) has a split rear window not mentioned and also a problem with selecting gears (especially when cold, but still significant when hot) forward back was fine by there must have been a linkage problem as sideways was very difficult.
Other example was tatty cosmetically and had a split rear window also (although mentioned) and the engine seamed very jumpy (think it would require some sensor at a guess to solve).
Both had history and under 100k miles.

Was wondering how low these had dropped when following a tatty looking R reg example with split rear window and a cracked rear bumper over the M3 at J5 this morning, sounds rather similar to the one described above so I guess its a common issue.

Walk away. If mine hadn't warped a disc I would have it in the ads now. Just trying to chose if I spend the £400ish for new pads and disks and then sell or just put up and have done.Other example was tatty cosmetically and had a split rear window also (although mentioned) and the engine seamed very jumpy (think it would require some sensor at a guess to solve).

Anyway, not an ad for my car, but a little advice and honest facts.
They are not rocket science if you are happy with your own work and not concerned about how happy the next owner will be about it. I would at least suggest that you sent it to a man with the right box of software every so often however. Where ever you source them parts are not cheap and they make the keyheads out of German chocolate.
Most are over 10 years old now and age is starting to weed out the weaker, less well maintained cars. Forget about cars with half crunched bumpers, mix and match tyres, ripped interiors and roves. Also disregard those with gearbox or engine woes you will spend far more putting these right than you will knock off the price. Expect the odd stone chip, the little star in one of the 2 boots that you had to look for (
), and perhaps one or two Tescways a
hole with a trolley dings. Personally I would also avoid garage queens with surprisingly low miles. Like any car they need regular exercise and prefer an active life to being parked up for weeks between dives; mine never feels better than covering 100+ mile stretches in total comfort.
As for spec. that is entirely personal choice. Mine hasn't got the centre storage bin that many have but it gives me extra space (especially when climbing in through the passenger side when someone parks too close to the drivers door) and many are actually only CD holders. There is plenty of storage space about anyway. Some say seat heaters are important to Winter roof down motoring I wouldn't know myself but can't say I wish I had them. I would say that the BOSE system and Lux pack would be my desired options and that anything else is optional.

I just sold an immaculate 1998 Boxster for 6.5k - if you take your time and pick the right one they can be an incredibly rewarding car to own. A years ownership costs me about £600 with a full service and 1 fault with the suspension strut (common failure).
I've owned mine for a year, and made back what I bought it for. A very fun and reliable car it has been, it will be sorely missed. I looked for quite some time to buy mine, there are a lot out there, make sure you find a well looked after example.

I still reckon that buying one is the easy bit - its actually running one thats expensive. Mine goes through a set of tyres a year at around £800-£1000 a set. And an oil change is expensive simply because you need to use a properly decent oil and theres lots of it.
Still a fantastic car though.

Sold mine a few months ago, it was a 2.7, 51 reg and was absolutely pristine. Was really difficult to sell and in the end got far less then i was hoping for.
Been looking at the prices now and they have dropped even more in the last few months, really is a good time to buy one.
My mate is thinking about selling his Boxster S, v reg with about 50k but wants 7.5k for it. Told him to wait and keep hold of it for a while as the likelihood of him selling a car this close to xmas is going to be pretty hard.
In answer to the original question, yes for 5k you can get yourself a decent 2.5, if you are lucky you may even get a 2.7. Personally i would not bother with a 2.5 and would go for a 2.7 as a minimum. Make sure you budget for at least an oil change every year, and use decent oil. Also remember these things run so much better when using proper fuel (98ron) as opposed to 95.
Not the easiest cars to work on, but as long as you got decent tools and a decent trolley jack / axle stands you should be fine, just remember these things are pretty low.

Don't know if it's still for sale but there was a yellow 2.5 on a p or r reg being sold on eBay by a guy on www.mbclub.co.uk. Looked to have been maintained very well during his tenure. He was looking for around 5-6k

I don't really see this as all that surprising tbh.RX-8's, 350z's and S2k's are all similar money these days.
Porsche's history shows that 924's, 944's and 968's have all dropped to very low values in the past. Why would anyone expect the Boxster to be any different?
