I'm going to buy a car. Which one?
Discussion
Ok. So I'm bored with my current hack. It owes me nothing, and tbh I'll probably sorn it and come back to it if I ever want to use it again. So, I decided I'd buy something new.
I'm split between what I want to go for though. I can't decide if I want something go-kart-y or big and womfy. I'm willing to spend upto around £2500.
The car will be used twice weekly for running between Hull and Scarborough - so on crappy B roads.
Option one: The GF has a Fiesta thingy which is rather good fun, despite it being the 1.25. I understand the Zetec S came with a 1.6 which would be all
right in a car that size. The thing that concerns me slightly is whether I'd find the ride too harsh on the road between Driffield and Staxton.
Option two: I do rather like old E class Mercs. Not the really old ones, but the quite but no so old ones. Like this:

Are they as comfortable as they look? Anything to watch out for? I understand rust is an issue (with both vehicles I've mentioned), Cambelts? Diesel options for the merc? Did it come with the 5cyl diesel engine (3.2, iirc).
Cheers!

If money is an issue, then you're probably best going the Fiesta route than the E-Class route.
The Merc could land you with big bills, the fiesta is less likely to do so.
Personally, i'll suggest 2.0 Focus Zetec. Drives well and is reasonably comfy, and won't cost the earth to run.
But really, you need to decide if you want fun or comfy, before people will offer suggestions.
Currently, you've narrowed it down to 'a car'.

Money isn't an issue as such... But if I'm getting big bills (circa >£1k) regularly it'd get tiresome rather quickly. The Merc could land you with big bills, the fiesta is less likely to do so.

My current car is a 'middle of the road' sort of car, much like the Focus. I think, to be honest, I'm more likely to go with the Merc.

Anyway.. if its a choice of the two.. i'd go for a fiesta.. should be able to get a reasonable MY02 car for that amount of cash..
