New speed camera could change a lot
Discussion
Scientists are testing a new camera which can do drivers for tailgating, not wearing a seatbelt and speeding.

If it gets approved then it could catch thousands of motorists out.
Personally, I'm quite positive about it. Barring the speeding bit (speeding is bad in certain conditions but not the most dangerous crime), I think it's great that it can detect tailgating - which is far more dangerous (in my opinion) to speeding.
What do you think?

The cameras here in Switzerland already detect seatbelts not being worn- a lot of people don't wear them for some reason here.
I think it's a much better use of cameras- trying to prevent dangerous driving practices such as tailgating, driving whilst on a mobile phone where attention to the road is decreased.
Stilll dislike "speed" cameras in all their forms however!

Not sure about this. What if the driver ahead suddenly slams brakes on for some reason and you have to brake but end up in the zone which is deemed to close?
Or someone cuts you up and the camera thinks it is you at fault for being too close?
Are they all going to be on a massive trailer that you can't possibly miss? Obviously everyone will just drive properly when they see one.

Once again, cameras are not the way to solve a problem. Cameras cannot use discretion like a human can. Tail-gating is dangerous and stupid, and deserves punishment, but there are too many ways for a camera to bang fines and points on people getting caught out by flaws in the system. Obviously two cars moving close together at low speed are not involved in tail-gating, but two cars at high speed are, how will this machine determine speed and distance between cars accurately, and determine an offence has been committed? How will it allow for circumstances like vehicles being towed? How badly will the legislation that governs this device be written?
Sounds like more bad news to me.

I think it's virtually impossible to quantify the precise point at which your speed becomes unsafe, but there's no way that hovering 5 feet off someone's bumper at 60mph is ever going to be safe.
Quite what they'll do for vehicles under tow and vintage cars without seat belts I don't know. I'm also curious to see if it would recognise a six point harness rather than a lap-and-daigonal.
In theory, though, I think it's much better than the current cameras. Take away the speed part (or restrict it to pedestrian areas) and I'd be fully in favour.
On a different note, I've seen lots of new cameras springing up recently, about 6ft tall, painted grey and sort of spindly with various bits jutting off a central frame; any idea what they are? I don't know if they're speed or just traffic monitoring?
Not hugely relevant now the SCPs have all been scrapped and there's no financial incentive for councils to operate them. Still, one that catches w
kers without belts, dodgy front lights and muppets who use their mobile whilst driving would be a great benefit.
The spindly ones are traffic monitoring cameras I think.

I think they should spend the money on installing static ANPR cameras on the main entry and exit routes of most if not every major city in the UK.
Far too many people driving around illegally, be it no insurance, no tax or stolen cars. That would make me feel a whole lot safer on the roads.

Agree, but you need police officers to do some arresting too. Why would I give a damn if I was caught on APNR if my car wasn't registered to my name and address anyway?Far too many people driving around illegally, be it insurance, tax or stolen cars.
