Tootled around in an S40 the other day with Volvo's BLindspot Information System and thought it was a really well thought-out, executed and helpful system. Do any other manufacturers have something similar?

Sounds similar to a system Audi has, think its called lane assist? but could be called something else? smile

EDIT:

Nope its called "Audi side assist", lane assist stops you from drifting out of lane

You get a little light on the inside of each of the A-pillars and sensors on the wingmirrors detect if something is in the blindspot. If it detects something, the lights illuminate.
