Apart from a few anniversary specials, you never actually see a 911 called a 911.

Any idea why?

It would be like labelling a road "this is a road". ?

Iconic cars don't need them. You won't find any Mustang badges on a modern post 2005 Mustang either. Or indeed a camaro badge on the 3rd and 4th gen Camaros.

Because Porsche are still pissed that they couldn't call it the 901 and don't want the constant reminder that they were beaten by the French.

Non? Well, it's a theory.

They are not 911's, they are Porsche Carrera, or Turbo, or SC etc

911 was a factory designation and was the prefix of the part numbering scheme, as was 964, 930, 993 etc.

Its like saying why is there no E34 badge on a BMW 525.

That is wrong. The car is called 911.

Hmm, funny then that there is no mention of 997 there.

Always amazes me that an owner of an iconic model car doesn't know much about them..

Porsche GB don't see it that way on their website.

Hmmm, Porsche 911 sounds nice, but looks utter crap on the car.

The 911 badge doesn't look very good on the above examples. Maybe thats why they leave it off.

Surely it's the other way round?

BMW 5 Series is the same as saying Porsche 911, people not in the know would understand what you mean even though it's non-specific to the actual model.
BMW E34 is like saying Porsche 997 but would only really be understood by car geeks. I'm sure Porsche refer to the 911 as a 911(997) just like a Boxster is a 986/987
