Unfortunately I’ve been involved in a fault accident and I’m currently looking for a new car as I simply cant live without a car but there’s one problem. My insurance has gone up a lot. It has gone up to about £1500 from £1000 with my fault claim but here’s the really annoying bit. I’m 21 and have had my licence for 3 years 10 months and 16 days (sad I know) but if I was to tell my insurance I’ve had it for this long then the quote comes in at £1500 but if I wait until 19th December this year it goes down by £300 as I would have had my licence for 4 years!
The insurance don’t take into account the months, they just take into account the years so they see it as I’ve had my licence for 3 years. That is so frustrating, so really I have no choice but to wait until 19th December and I’ve already been off the road for about 3 weeks.
I only work 9 miles away from my home but its difficult to get there on the bus and would take nearly 2 hours so I’ve been getting the bus to my friends house and jumping in his car to go to work but to be quite honest its an absolute pain in the arse! I’ve searched high and low for cheaper insurance and that’s the best I can find.
I just want to get back on the road, I love driving!

Young person in expensive insurance shocker. Why would they have a progressive system with adjustments that take into account months/days/hours? It's extra effort for them for no reason, a year is a logical figure to use. It can be frustrating, yes - but we all have that situation, when our insurance is due a couple weeks before our birthday, or some other major change.

I'd just wait until the four-year mark, and cycle in the meantime.

Don't lie - you have a knock and they might check, is saving £300 over having your insurance cancelled when a claim arises and facing the subsequent costs worth it?

Why don't you just buy one months insurance from a short term insurance provider, and then get a full year in December?

300 quid or 6 weeks. It's a really simple choice. Will the opinions of the PH masses push you down one route or the other? If so, call a vote.

Would never lie. Might as well lie about everything else. the amount of bad luck I have with driving it just wouldnt be worth the risk.
I just cant believe the difference an extra year of me driving would make but there you go, i know it's just because i'm young.
Cant wait to get back on the road and it's amazing how much you take driving for granted. I never used to be able to cope with just going a few hours without driving if my car was in the garage.

If I lived 9 miles from work, I'd do it on a bicycle. 30 minutes, no problem.

Sorry wasn't having a go and I sympathise with the situation. My premium this yr was £100 more than last due the swapping for a new car.

I had it in my mind that adding someone to the policy would increase the cost so left my wife off.

Turns out by adding her it dropped by £100 - apparently its because the risk is spread across two drivers.

Its a black art.

I have 2 people on my policy and it more or less halved the premium. Absolutely crazy!
Anyway these are going to be the longest 6 weeks of my life but just need to build up my no claims etc all over again and then i can moan about getting insurance quotes for a few quid!
