I am looking at a Volvo V70 T5 as a station car at about 2.5k.
Can anyone suggest things to look out for?
It has 128k on the clock and others seem to go for £4k+
Any help would be good.
I am only doing 8k a year.
I would look for the Volvo forum below - it will help if you let them know the model year - I'm guessing it's pre-02?Can anyone suggest things to look out for?

Look out for the ETM issue - if the car is running erratically it could be due to a faulty throttle module (it was fitted to all x70 cars between 99-02 I think) and it is £££s to replace.
We had to replace that on ours.Bar that they are pretty bombproof (ARB links get clonky every now and then - cheap to replace though).
Vey Fast Barge - mega tow car.
The ETM (Electronic throttle module) is a pain but isn't the end of the world. Volvo usually charge about £500 to supply/fit (they were more but they reduced the price) or BBA will remanufacture them for £149 which has the advantage that you don't need a new one coding to the car so can get any mechanic to remove or or do it yourself.
They're fiddly on the turbo but a decent spanner man should be able to do it in under 1/2 hour. Early indication is an erratic idle which can sometimes be cured by cleaning the throttle body out. More serious failure manifests its self as stuttering under light loads as if the engine is momentarily cutting out.

I wouldn't want an Auto, yuk - need the manual to help with the turbo lag.

It affects all petrol engined Volvos from 98-02 with the Magnetti Marelli ETM, until they switched to Bosch, but to answer the above^, I believe after the Watchdog fiasco on the whole thing, Volvo dropped the price to about £200 for the unit, but you'll need it coding at about £40-50.They're fiddly on the turbo but a decent spanner man should be able to do it in under 1/2 hour. It's obviously not cheap, but better than when the problem first happened. Also, it is not an 'if' problem, but a 'when'.
Part of the reason why 98-02 2.4 S80s are so cheap, I really did my homework when looking into it a few months ago.

Removal/Fitting + Coding + Part always seems to work out about £500 from Volvo. Or £149 to BBA and £50 cash to a friendly mechanic to remove/refit (or DIY if you have small hands). So £200 and the car off the road for 2-3 days. Annoying but not exactly the end of the world. It's obviously not cheap, but better than when the problem first happened. Non-turbo are dead easy, even an idiot (i.e. me) can do them - 4 bolts, 1 screw, post it to BBA and refit 3 days later.
